Kangra Valley Taragarh Palampur

The area between the Dhauladhar and the Shiwalik mountains is known as the Kangra Valley. Starting from close to Mandi and spanning to the northwest till Pathankot, the Kangra Valley is named after the town of Kangra. The Kangra Valley is considered as one of the most relaxing spiritual destinations in the Himalayas. The Kangra Valley Railway runs on a narrow gauge line taking visitors from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar via Palampur, Jawalamukhi and Kangra.

Located in the Kangra Valley and surrounded by small hills and pretty tea gardens is the secluded residential estate of Taragarh. Established by Nawab Sadiq Mohammed Khan Bahadur, the ruler of Bhawalpur in 1931 as Al Hilal, it is now known as Taragarh. Today it serves as a heritage hotel.

Palampur is a small town located in the Kangra Valley. Boasting of natural splendour, the town enjoys a pleasant climate all around the year. Within short distance from the town is the Bundla Chasm where visitors can visit a waterfall. There is also a nature park at a short distance from Palampur, the Saurabh Van Vihar.

Temples


Vaidyanatha Temple (Baijnath)

This temple has one of the twelve jyotirlingas. The temple is located along the road on the Mandi-Palampur road. There is a huge statue of Nandi at the entrance of the temple.

Jawalamukhi Temple (Jawalamukhi)

This temple is located about 30 Km from Kangra and is located close to the Beas River. It is one of the most important Hindu shrines. The temple is dedicated to the appearance of Goddess of Fire.

Sri Baglamukhi Temple (Kangra)

This temple is dedicated to Giddess Baglamukhi, a Hindu goddess of power. It is an important temple in the Kangra Valley.

Bajreshwari Temple (Kangra)

This temple is one of the 51 shaktipeeths. It is located in the heart of the town of Kangra and is visited by thousands of devotees every year.

Chamunda Devi Temple

This temple is dedicated the Chamunda Devi and is located about 25Km from Palampur. It is one of the most important temples in Himachal Pradesh and is believed to have been built 700 years ago.

Monasteries


Tashijong Monastery

This monastery is located about 12Km from Palampur and is within close vicinity of Taragarh. Tourists can buy thangka paintings and Tibetan handicrafts from the monastery.

Sherab Ling Monastery (Bajinath)

This monastery offers complete facilities for monks and also featues a museum, monastic college and retreat facilities.

Adventures Options


Trekking

There are numerous trekking routes across the Kangra Valley. A number of routes lead out of Palampur across the Dhauladhar Mountains to the town of Chamba. Some major treks include Sanghar pass to Bharmaur via Holi. Another route is the trek from Mcleodganj to Trihund, the trek from Baijnath to Bharmaur across the Jalsu pass.

Paragliding

Bir-Billing and Dhelu are the best places in the Kangra Valley to enjoy paragliding. The best time to enjoy paragliding is from March to May and from September to November.

Mountaineering

Kangra Valley offers a wide variety of mountaineering options. The Dhauladhar Mountains and the Shiwalik Mountains binding the valley either sides gives adventure enthusiasts a number of choices.

Best Tips

Some of the must try delicacies in the Kangra Valley and Palampur are Chana Madra, khatta, aloo palda and lotus stem. These can be tried at any restaurant serving local cuisine.

Kangra Valley / Taragarh / Palampur Shopping

The main shopping destinations in the Kangra Valley include McLeodganj and Kotwali Bazaars. The McLeodganj markets are famous for their Tibetan handicrafts, woollen carpets, jackets, hand-knitted cardigans, jackets, jewellery, etc.

Palampur has a few good shops. Apart from regular purchases like carpets, Tibetan shawls, jewellery, thangka paintings, visitors should buy the Kangra tea.

Tourist's Travel Route to Kangra valley / Taragarh / Palampur

The nearest broad gauge railway station is at Pathankot. The entire valley can be explored on the Kangra Valley Express that runs on the narrow gauge line 164Km long. The train starts from Pathankot and travels up to Bajinath crossing Palampur and other pretty areas. Taragarh can be easily reached from major cities like Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Nangal, Ropar, Una, Palampur, Kangra and Pragpur.

Visitors can also access the different towns and the entire Kangra Valley by road from almost all parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The most easily accessible airports are at Pathankot and Kangra. There are straight flights to Delhi from both the airports. Another air access is the Gaggal airport about 30Km from the Kangra Valley.
