Kufri Chail Solan

One of the best ski resorts in Himachal Pradesh, Kufri is a picturesque hill station with an excellent location close to Shimla. Sitting at a height of 2510m above sea level, Kufri is best known for its beautiful setting and adventure sports. Its close proximity to nature parks and several hiking and trekking trails makes it a popular destination among tourists.

Around 34 Km south of Kufri is the scenic town of Chail. The town is settled on a peak overlooking the Sutlej Valley. It is famous for being home to the highest cricket ground in the world and also for having a polo ground at a height of 2250m above sea level. The town once served as the summer capital of Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. The Royal Summer Palace in Chail is a major attraction for visitors.

Travelling further from Chail around 39Km is the city of Solan. Featuring the oldest brewery in India, Solan is also known as the mushroom capital of India because of the excessive cultivation. There are numerous temples and monasteries in and around Solan that appeal tourists.

Siddh Baba ka Mandir (Chail)

This was originally the site of the royal palace but after a ‘sidh’ appeared in the dream of Bhupinder Singh, the site of the palace was shifted and a temple was built on the site.

Kali ka Tibba (Chail)

It is an ancient temple devoted to Goddess Kali. Tourists can enjoy an adventurous trek up the Blossom Hill to the temple.

Shoolini Mata Temple (Solan)

This is an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Shoolini. The temple area conducts the Shoolini fair every year.

Jatoli Temple (Solan)

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiv and is located about 6Km from Solan. It is best visited during the Mahashivratri fair.

Monastery


Yung Drung Tibetan Monastery (Solan)

This monastery is also known as the Yung Drung Ling or the Bon Monastery and is located about 12Km from Solan. It houses a huge statue of Lord Shenrab Mibo.

Trekking

Whether it is Kufri, Chail or Solan; there are numerous trekking trails in the area. A trek up the Mahasu Peak in Kufri can prove to be quite a challenge. But the trek is worth the handwork. There is an amusement park on the summit and a nag temple. The Kufri Nature Park also features a number of trekking trails. The Chail Wildlife Sanctuary offers several trekking and hiking options. The mountains near Solan also have some exciting treks.

Skiing

Kufri is a ski resort and sees thousands of skiers every year. The best time to enjoy skiing is from September to February.

The hot Maggi from the stalls in Kufri and the roasted corn in Solan should not be missed.

Kufri / Chail / Solan Shopping

Kufri does not offer fancy shopping; there are a few stalls and shops that sell basic items. On the other hand Solan is well-known for its market and excellent shopping scene. It is the commercial centre of Himachal Pradesh.

There are a number of malls and markets in Solan where tourists can shop. Some of these places include the Upper Bazaar, Lower Bazaar, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, Chowk Bazaar, etc. Some of the best malls in Solan are the Dang Mall, Anand Cineplex Mall, Platinum Mall and the City Centre Plaza. The best things to buy in Solan include Tibetan shawls, handicrafts, jewellery, hand woven woollen clothes, wood crafted items, etc.

Chail too does not boast of exquisite shopping. There are a few small shops selling woollens, wooden items, shawls, etc.

Tourist's Travel Route to Kufri / Chail / Solan

Kufri is easily accessible from Shhimla by road. It is located about 16Km from Shimla by a well-paved road. Buses, taxis, car rentals or private cars can easily help tourists reach Kufri. The closest airport to Kufri is the Jubbarhatti airport near Shimla. The nearest railhead is also at Shimla, but is served by a narrow gauge line connecting Shimla to Kalka.
Chail is located about 34Km from Kufri. It is best accessed by road from Kufri. Even when travelling from Shimla the road leads via Kufri.

Solan is located about 39Km from Chail, 45Km from Shimla and 70Km from Chandigarh. The train from Kalka to Shimla stops at Solan. Buses from Delhi and Chandigarh to Shimla via NH 22 also stop at Solan. The nearest airport is the Jubbarhatti airport near Shimla.
