Dalhousie is a cantonment town which is located in Chamba district inthe Lower Himalayas. Chamba is a district located on the north western border of Himachal Pradesh. The town is well developed and has lot of reminiscences of the colonial period. Located at a height of 2036 meters, Dalhousie is spread over five hills viz Potreys, Kathlog, Tehra,Balun and Bakorta.  During 1860s it was a popular town among the British Army personnel hence it had been named after the nineteenth century British Governor General Lord Dalhousie. The altitude of the town varies at different places. This is the reason it has a large variety of vegetation like pine grooves, oaks, deodars, flowering rhododendrons etc.

Lord Dalhousie established Dalhousie as a summer retreat. The town boasts rich architecture that belongs to the colonial period. Many beautiful churches of that time are still present in Dalhousie. The oldest church of the town was the St. John church that was constructed in the year 1863, St. francis church was made in 1894, St. Andrew in the year 1903 and St. Patric, being the recent one was constructed in 1909.

Dalhousie-As a Land of Milk and Honey

Dalhousie is also known as the land Of Milk and honey. All credit goes to Lord Dalhousie, for establishing such a delightful hill town embellished with beautiful architecture of the colonial period. The fresh air and lush green vegetation of the town adds to the beauty of the place.

Places to See in Dalhousie

  • Dain Kund Peak – is the tallest peak located near Dalhousie.
  • Alah Water Tank – it is the main water tank in Dalhousie, having capacity of holding ten million gallons of water.
  • Panchpula – meaning five bridges; is the name given to a single stream feeding few other pools.
  • Upper Bakrota –This area is located at the highest altitude of Dalhousie. Many beautiful estates are located here.
  •  Kalatope Wildlife Reserve – This spot is ideal for weekend getaway.
  • Barapathar – It is a famous temple amidst the thick forest.
  • Churches –Many ancient churches are located here including the St. Andrew's, Protestant Church,St. Francis' St. Patrick's, and St. John's.

Climate and Best Time to Visit Dalhousie

The climate of Dalhousie is very pleasant and is loved by the tourists throughout the year.

  • Winter: This season starts in the month of December and lasts till February. Temperature ranges between 10°C to 1°C. Tourists love to visit Dalhousie during winters to enjoy snowfall.
  • Summer: From March to May, summer season lasts in Dalhousie. During summers maximum temperature never goes above 35°C. This season is ideal for sightseeing and nature walks. The higher altitudes are covered with snow even during summer season.
  • Monsoons: Mild showers are experienced during monsoon season that is from the month of June to mid-September. These rain showers do not cause any inconvenience to the tourists.

For sigh seeing and adventure activities summer season is the best time to visit. For experiencing the lush green beauty of this beautiful hill town monsoon season is perfect, usually for short trips. Those who want to enjoy snowfall; winter season is the best time to visit as the entire place is dominated by the snow.

How to Reach

By Air

Pathankot is the nearest airport to Dalhousie but it is not very well connected to other areas. The price of tickets is also very high. Next nearest air bases are Jammu and Amritsar and to fly to these places is a better option than to land at Pathankot. Jet airways and Air India flights are daily available.

By Rail

Pathankot is the nearest rail head and it is well connected to all major stations. There are direct trains available from Delhi.

By Bus

The Journey by bus is for around ten hours from Delhi. Volvo buses are available for overnight journey daily from Delhi. These buses charges Rs 1500 per person. Another option is to hire a cab from Delhi. It charges around 8000-10000 rupees.
