Chhattisgarh - A State Beholding Pocket Full of Surprises

Chhattisgarh is an Indian state located in the middle of the country. In terms of geographical area, it is the tenth largest state and with respect to population, it occupies sixteenth position. The population of the state is 25.5 million and the total area is 52,200 sq miles. Chhattisgarh has been making excellent progress since its formation in 2000. The state is a major supplier of steel and source of electricity for the country. It contributes 15% of the country’s total steel production.

Chhattisgarh state came into being on the 1st Nov 2000 by the partition of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Sixteen Chhattisgarhi-speaking districts located in the southeastern part of Madhya Pradesh were added to the new state. Raipur is the capital of Chhattisgarh. The state shares its border with 6 Indian state and is bordered by Jharkhand in the north east, Odisha in the east, Andhra Pradesh in the south, Uttar Pradesh in the North, Madhya Pradesh in the northwest and Maharashtra in the southwest. There are presently 27 districts in Chhattisgarh.

The state of Chhattisgarh has a rich cultural history and as you move across the state you experience lot of diversity. The state has some of the most exquisite Buddhist sites, monuments, temple with precision carvings, caves, rock paintings, palaces, wildlife, flora, fauna and waterfalls. Most of the tourist destination in the state are still restored in its original form and offer excellent experience to the tourists as compared to the overcrowded places. Bastar district of the state is popular for tribal art and handicrafts. It offers excellent eco friendly atmosphere and cultural heritage to the tourists. The state has good bio diversity and approximately 41.33% of its total area is under forest.

Chhattisgarh experiences tropical climatic conditions. The close proximity of the state to the tropic of cancer makes the climate humid and hot. Monsoons are the main source of rainfall. The temperature during the summer months touches a scorching 45°C (113°F). The state receives the monsoons during the June-October period which comes as a relief to the scorching heat. The state experiences mild winters during the period between November-January and this is considered as the ideal time to visit the state.
