Dharamshala, a well known tourist place in Himachal Pradesh, is situated on the upper hilly terrains of Kangra Valley and is considered as the synonym of Buddhism in India. This city is also famous because of the village McLeodGanj nearby, which is known as the residential place of Dalai Lama.

Places to See in Dharamshala


These rock temples are of great attraction for the visitors and devotees because of its rock cut structures. The carvings of these temples are just like Ellora’s Kailash Temple. In its main shrine, there are stone images of Ram, Laxman and Sita. In the middle of the lintel, there is Lord Shiva’s figure too.

Bhagsu Waterfall

This waterfall is delight to watch especially in the monsoon when the fall turns into a thirty feet cascade.

Bhagsunang Temple

This temple of Lord Shiva is of great attraction for the devotees. It is located at a distance of nearly 2 km from McLeodGanj Bazaar.

Kangra Art Museum

Kangra Art Museum is one of the most attractive places that tourist and historians like to see. It displays the rich past of Dharamshala.

Chamunda Temple, Kunal Pathri Temple, Dal Lake, Naddi, Jama Masjid, Triund, Mc Leod Ganj are also very popular places to visit.

Climate and Best Time to Visit Dharamshala

Summer season (From March month to June month) is considered as the best time to visit Dharamshala. However, you can visit this place anytime. But winter season is too cool and rainy season is very inconvenient so visitors try to avoid these months to visit this place. In summer season, the temperatures in daytime are very pleasant.

How to Reach

By Air

Gaggal Airport, also known as Kangara Airport, is the closest airport to Dharamshala. Once you reach Delhi, you can make use of the service of Kingfisher Red Airlines to reach Gaggal Airport because this Airline offers daily flights between Delhi and Dharamshala. You need to hire a cab from the airport to go to the main town.

By Rail

Pathankot is the nearest railway station from Dharamshala. You can travel by narrow gauge train from Pathankot to Kangara which is nearly 18 km from Pathankot. From Kangara station you can hire private taxis or shared taxis to reach Dharamshala. You can also avail bus services from Kangara station.

By Bus

Inter State Bus Services connects Dharamshala to other major cities such as New Delhi. You can also get regular bus services from Dharamshala to Shimla, Manali, Chamba, Dalhouse etc. Several other local buses too ply between McLeodgang and Dharamshala.
