Rated as one of the most after holiday destinations in Himachal Pradesh, Dalhousie is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India. Surrounded by pleasing natural views, Dalhousie was even popular during the British Rule. Dalhousie is located at an altitude of 8000 feet above sea level. The hill station still has its historic charm; tourists can spot several Victorian style mansions in the town. The town spans over five hills giving visitors with several options of hiking and trekking.

About 24 Km from Dalhousie is the scenic hill station of Khajjiar. Popularly called as the Mini Switzerland of India, Khajjiar is placed on a small plateau with a stream flowing by it. Surrounded by lush greenery and located at the base of the Dhauladhar Mountains, Khajjiar is definitely worth visiting. Tourists can enjoy a wide range of adventure activities in the area and also some scenic sightseeing. The Khajjiar Lake is a must-visit attraction.

Laxmi Narayan Temple (Dalhousie)

This is a 10th century temple and is the oldest and also the largest temple in the Chamba district. The temple has six shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Chamunda Devi Temple (Dalhousie)

One of the most popular temples in the region, it is located along the Baner River. The temple is 750 years old and is dedicated to Goddess Kali. There are also images and idols of other gods and goddesses.

Khajji Nag Temple (Khajjiar)

The temple is located close to the Khajjiar Lake and is believed to have been built in the 12th century. The temple is devoted to Nag Devta (Snake). There are also images of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the temple.

Golden Devi Temple (Khajjiar)

Located on the banks of the Khajjiar Lake and adjoining a golf course, the temple features a golden dome. It is one of the major attractions in Khajjiar.


St. John’s Church

This is the oldest church in the town with significant historical value. The church is built amidst beautiful natural surroundings and is among the most visited destinations in Dalhousie.

St. Patrick’s Church

This is the largest church in Dalhousie located about 2Km from the bus stand. The church was built in the early 20th century.

Adventures Options


The Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary is within close reach from Dalhousie via Khajjar. The sanctuary is up a steep slope at about a 30Km trek from Dalhousie. It is one of the most popular treks in the area. Some other trekking routes around Dalhousie include trekking from Dainkund to Jot, trekking from Barapatthar twelve rocks to Panjpulla and the Sach and Cheni Pass trek. The Sach and Cheni Pass trek is the most adventurous but also quite dangerous. These treks can be taken only during the summer months.

The hills surrounding Khajjiar are wonderful to enjoy trekking expeditions. Most of the treks around Khajjiar can be taken by both novice and experienced trekkers.


Camping is another activity that tourists can enjoy in Dalhousie and Khajjiar. The Khajjiar Lake serves as the best camping ground in the area where tourists can get exotic views of nature.

The momos in Dalhousie are delicious. Khajjar has some beautiful apple orchards that can be visited. Tourists can pluck fresh apples and relish the juicy fruits.

Dalhousie & Khajjiar Shopping

Dalhousie offers an exciting shopping scene. The Mall Road is the main shopping destination in the town. The Tibetan Market also offers a lot of fanfare to the visitors. The best items to buy in Dalhousie include woollens, jackets, carpets, bags, Kashmiri and Tibetan shawls and handicrafts. The Himachal Handloom Industry Emporium and the Tibetan Handicrafts Centre are good for buying authentic products.

Khajjiar offers limited shopping. Visitors can find items of basic necessities. The main road in Khajjiar has some good shops.

Tourist's Travel Route to Dalhousie & Khajjiar

Dalhousie is about 75 Km from Pathankot, which is the nearest airport and also the nearest railhead to the hill station. There is only one flight to Pathankot from Delhi. There is a regular bus service from Pathankot to Dalhousie. Tourists can also hire taxis or get car rentals to reach Dalhousie.

From Dalhousie, Khajjiar is just 24 Km away. The road between Dalhousie and Khajjiar is scenic and quite pleasing. The bus service between the two hill stations is not very frequent. Visitors can however get taxis and also travel by private vehicles.
