Swaroop Sagar Lake

Swaroop Sagar is an artificial lake located in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The lake was built by Maharana Swaroop Singh and hence, the lake was named after him. It is situated behind the well-known Jagadish temple near Chand Pol connecting to Rangsagar. Swaroop Sagar Lake is also known as Kumharia Talab, which is coupled with other lakes - Sagar Lake and Lake Pichola. This Lake was created to supply water to the citizens of Udaipur. Swaroop Sagar is considered to be the most beautiful lakes in the state. With the presence of numerous lakes in the region, Udaipur is known as the Lake City or Venice of the East.

History

Swaroop Sagar Lake was built to balance the flood situation and maintain the water level in the connecting lakes. But post 1999, the formation of artificial lakes was banned in Udaipur and the nearby areas of the lake were declared as no construction zone.

Swaroop Sagar Lake is surrounded by other lakes which remain to be the major tourist attractions. Some major tourist attractions are -

Fateh Sagar Lake

This is a man-made lake which is to the north east of Udaipur. Fateh Sagar Lake was built by Maharana and is situated to the north of Lake Pichola. The lake supports drinking water needs, upholds the ground water recharge, irrigation use and water for industrial use.

Lake Pichola

This fresh water lake is named after the village “Picholi” located nearby and was created in 1362. The Pichola Lake was developed in the last few centuries to meet the drinking water and agricultural needs of the city.

Jag Mandir

This is an island in Lake Pichola which has restaurants and eating joints. This island consists of garden patio.

Jagdish Temple

This temple is located in the center of Udaipur and is the largest Hindu temple in the region. The temple construction is of Indo-Aryan architecture and was created by Maharana Jagat Singh 1 in 1651. The temple is popular amongst tourists and has shopping options like traditional paintings and clothes available in the nearby market.

Best Time to Visit

The perfect season to visit Swaroop Sagar Lake, Udaipur is winter. The climate is very pleasing and tourists flock in huge numbers during this time. Anytime between the month of September to late March or April is suitable to visit the location. The month of January is the coldest month, but the days are warm and sunny, but evenings and nights are cold.

By Railways

Major cities in Rajasthan are well connected to the other major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Surat, Gwalior etc. Also, the heritage trains like Palace on Wheels, Maharaja Express and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels stop at Udaipur.

By Road

On national highway (NH-8) lays Udaipur which is well connected to Mumbai and Delhi via road. One can take private cab and drive from Kota, Jaipur or from Ahmadabad. Tourists can also take state transport buses from Bikaner House.

By Air

About 20 kms from Udaipur is Maharana Pratap Airport, which is also known as Dabok Airport. Tourists can fly daily from Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur.

Visitors can also commute through local transport like city buses, auto rickshaw, and private cabs, radio taxis to main attractions and to the airport.
