Saheliyon ki Bari is one of the major tourist destinations in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Literally meaning the ‘garden of maidens’, this garden was built for the group of 48 attendants that a princess brought along with her. Located below the embankment of the Fateh Sagar Lake, the courtyard has many pools, fountains, and water channels that enhance the ambience of the place.

According to legend the garden was constructed to help the Queen’s maidens have fun and peace away from the political machinations of the main palace. The Queen and her companions used to enjoy endless hours of relaxation and fun and that explains the name of this nature-blessed garden.

History

Saheliyon Ki Bari is one of the most beautiful garden destinations in Udaipur and pulls in a large number of visitors annually by the sheer strength of its amazing natural beauty, excellent layout, and spectacular views.

The garden was built by King Maharana Sangram Singh for the royal ladies who came to the palace as a part of the dowry of the Queen. The magnificent garden has a large number of beautifully designed fountains, four water pools, lotus pools, and bird fountains. In fact, there are water bodies all over the place making a natural gushing sound which captivates visitors.

The Fountains were imported by the King from England and laid along the main reservoir of the garden. The marble pavilion is one of the highlights of this place and so is the lotus pool which gives the garden a soft, romantic ambience. The finely chiseled kiosks, marble elephants, and lions- each carved out of a single piece of stone- are among the other main attractions of the garden.

Fountains

The fountains, which give the appearance of rain water cascading down in a rush, are one of the main attractions of the Saheliyon ki Bari garden. The fountains were imported from England in 1889 and have four black, polished kiosks in marble at the corners and one white one in the center. The popular Sawan-Bhado is situated at the left of the main square and there is one more located towards the right. The others are interestingly named - Kamal Talai and Bin-Badal Barsaat and Rasaleela.

The Museum

The garden also has a museum that is famous for its display of objects used by the royal household. Some of the interesting collections seen here are the various stuffed animals and pictures that depict the varied elements of the heritage of Rajasthan.

Lotus Pond and Rose Garden

The famous lotus pools at the Saheliyon ki Bari are placed at a lower level so that they are naturally maintained by the force of gravity. The Rose Garden has over 100 stunning varieties of flowers of various colors. Flowers of rare colors such as deep blue, orange, and purple are seen in the garden.
