In Jammu and Kashmir, dominantly three major religions are followed – Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. However, Islam stands ahead in terms of the total population, and you will find a majority of Muslims in this state. While Hindus are few in numbers in J & K, the followers of Buddhism majorly inhabit Ladakh and surrounding areas in the state.


The Kashmir valley is predominately inhabited by the Muslim population, which constitutes almost 90% of the total population in the state. In Jammu, Kargil, as well as other districts, Islam forms a major segment of the population. Here, the Muslims are typically divided into two sects – Shias and Sunnis.


Hinduism is the second major religion in Jammu and Kashmir, mostly comprising of Gujjars and Kashmiri Pandits. Unfortunately, a major portion of Kashmiri Pandits has recently abandoned Kashmir valley in the fear of being threatened constantly, from being a minority sect. On the other hand, the Gujjars are rapidly getting converted to the Islamic faith.


A major segment of Buddhist followers can be typically found in Ladakh, Kashmir, which is supposedly the root of the religion. In Kashmir valley, Buddhists are generally minors, which also pose a threat on them to be converted into Islam religion, which is predominant here.
