Arthunkal Perunnal
Arthunkal Perunnal is a renowned festival celebrated in Kerala. Perunnal refers to the feast of Saint Sebastian. It is a 10 days grand festival celebrated in month of January. Name Arunthunkal Perunnal originated from village Aruthunkal of Kerala situated in West of Cherthala and North of Alappuzha town in Kerala. The holy church of Roman Martyr Saint Sebastian makes village a famous pilgrimage.
Celebration
Tourists can witness spectacular and colorful start of festival with fire crackers. Offering ‘ambum villium ‘(bow and arrow) performed by locals and tourists at church. People carry bow and arrow and roll oneself around the church remembering the Saint. Procession of decorated elephants carrying ‘Neercha ‘is main attraction for tourists. The beats of traditional drum and native dance ‘vellakalli’ give glimpse of rich culture of Kerala. On final day image of Saint is brought out to procession.
