The three reservoirs together have a capacity of 300 million gallons of water. The terraced garden was built to prevent contamination of water from the Towers of Silence situated close and used by the Mumbai’s Parsi community to put to rest the dead bodies of the community members.

The garden came to be known as Hanging Garden because of its location on the slope of a hill which creates an illusion of being suspended in air. It was established in 1881.
