Hanging Gardens

Hanging Gardens is a popular tourist destination of Mumbai. It was dedicated to the great barrister Pherozeshah Mehta. That’s why Hanging Gardens is also popularly known as Pherozeshah Mehta Garden. It is located in the Malabar Hill area of South Mumbai and has become a must-visit place for tourists while holidaying or during vacations. The garden sits atop three huge water reservoirs. The three reservoirs together have a capacity of 300 million gallons of water. The terraced garden was built to prevent contamination of water from the Towers of Silence situated close and used by the Mumbai’s Parsi community to put to rest the dead bodies of the community members.

The Garden Offers an Amazing View of the Surrounding Areas

The garden came to be known as Hanging Garden because of its location on the slope of a hill which creates an illusion of being suspended in air. It was established in 1881. The garden offers a great view of the enchanting sunset over the Arabian Sea. Evenings provide a fantastic sight of the streetlights along the Marine Drive which is poetically described as the Queen’s Necklace. The silhouette of the numerous high rises of the region creates a maze of lights that look amazing against the night sky of Mumbai. The garden was renovated and redesigned in 1921. Its location makes it possible for visitors to get a fantastic view of the sprawling Arabian Sea.

The Hedges and the Clock are Key Attractions

Visitors cannot but admire the cleanliness of the park and the variety of colorful flowers arranged in a creative way in various areas of the garden. The nearby Chowpatty Beach and the abundance of greenery in the Malabar Hill surroundings can be seen from the Hanging Garden which is situated at a height from surrounding areas.

The Hanging Gardens is located adjacent to the equally popular Kamala Nehru Park in the Malabar Hill area of Mumbai and is open to visitors on all days of the week. Entry is free of cost. Many people use the concrete track in the garden in morning and evening to have a stroll or a healthy, brisk walk. The garden has many hedges which are creatively shaped into shapes of various animals. Other plants too are designed to resemble various identifiable shapes. One of the attractions of the garden is the flower clock located in the center of the garden.

How to Reach

There are BEST buses running from all main places of Mumbai to Malabar Hill. There are private cabs and taxis available to ferry tourists from Mumbai Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station on the Central Railway and Churchgate Station on the Western railway. The nearest railway station is Charni Road on the Western Railway.
