Nagpur is geographically located at the centre of Maharashtra. It was founded by the Gonds and later came under the rule of Bhonsles and became a part of the Maratha Empire. The district got its name from the Nag River which flows in a serpentine path in this region. The city thus named as Nagpur, ‘Nag’ is the Marathi word for snake and ‘pur’ the suffix to denote the city or town. The district is also known as the ‘Tiger capital of India’ as the place connects to various Tiger reserves in India. Nagpur has witnessed fast development and became one of the prominent IT destinations in Maharashtra. The oranges from Nagpur are world famous and the city is also known as the ‘Orange city of India’.

History of Nagpur

Nagpur is one of the oldest cities which has shown human existence 3000 years ago and completed 3000 years in 2002. The remains of megalithic age were also found here. The district was under the rule of various Hindu rulers till the reign of Allaudin Khilji, after which Nagpur was under Tughlaq Dynasty in 1317. The Mughal rule was established in 17th century. In 19th century, this region came under the British rule and was made the capital of the central provinces. In 1956, the district formed a part of Maharashtra based of linguistic lines. A Dalit Buddhist movement was formed by Dr B.R Ambedkar in 1956 which is still active.

Gavilgad Fort

Gavilgad fort is one of the historical places in Nagpur. The fort was constructed by Hindu rulers who ruled Nagpur. The fort is 200-300 years old and located above 370 feet above sea level.

Adasa

The village of Adasa is famous for one of the ancient Ganapati temples. This idol of Ganapati is of great importance as it is one among the eight Ganapati temples in Vidharba region and believed to be svayambu or self evolved.

Balapur

Balapur is the district headquarters which is located at about 23 km from Akola. The place is home for an ancient fort built in 1960. The fort is one of the famous places to visit in Nagpur.

Shopping Destinations in Nagpur

Nagpur is also the major shopping destinations where one can buy clothing, footwear and other essential things in a cheaper rate without compromising on the quality. The best time to visit Nagpur is from October to March. The climate here is normally dry and humid throughout the year.

Summers are harsh in Nagpur with the temperature soaring up to 49 degrees, hence this time is not suitable for visiting the place due to extreme heat.

Winters are the best time to visit Nagpur as the place will be cold and pleasant to enjoy the place at its best.

Monsoon

Monsoons are during the months of July and September and Nagpur gets medium to heavy rainfalls every year.

Nagpur is a major railway station  that connects central railways and South east. There are many trains that connect Nagpur with the other parts of India. There are daily trains from Mumbai to Nagpur.

By Air

Nagpur also has good connectivity by air, the Sonegaon domestic airport is located at the city centre which is only 6 kms away. There are flights that connect to major cities in India.

By Road

The state government runs an efficient public transport system. There are regular bus services to Nagpur from other cities.
