Mumbai
Mumbai located in the west coast of India is the capital of the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai is known as the financial as well as entertainment capital of India. This city is home for some of the major financial institutions like the Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of India, Bombay Stock Exchange, SEBI and more. The city also owns the biggest film industry in India - the Bollywood and television industry. It is said that a lot of people from all around India come to Mumbai to earn a living. Mumbai is the fourth most populous city in the world.
The name Mumbai has been derived from the name of Kali Goddess, Mumba Devi. The name of Mumbai has undergone lot of reformation till it reached the present name. The most popular name was Bombay which was attained during the British rule in India. After Independence during the 20th century, the name was officially changed to Mumbai.
History of Mumbai
Mumbai has witnessed the rule of many rulers including foreign rulers and has also played an important part in India’s freedom struggle. Hence, tourists can see monuments and building built in Gothic and Indo Saracenic style.
Major Attractions in Mumbai
Mumbai being one of the largest metropolises in India has many places that are major tourist destinations. They are Marine drive, Chowpatty beach, Victoria buildings of fort area, Crawford market, Jahangir art gallery, Prince of Wales museum, National gallery of Modern art, Mani Bhavan, Mahalaxmi temple, Haji Ali shrine, Siddivinayak temple, Juhu beach, RBI museum to name a few.
Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus
Known as the Victoria terminus built during the British rule stands as one of the greatest historical monuments as well as one of the magnificent railway stations in the world. It was built during the British rule in India in 1888. It has a statue of Queen Victoria on the dome and hence named as Victoria Terminus. It was renamed to Chatrapati Shivaji terminus in 1996.
Global Vipassana Pagoda
It is the world’s largest pillarless dome which has the capacity to seat 8000 mediators at a time. It is the first Pagoda ever built after the rule of Emperor Ashoka.
Gateway of India
The Gateway of India is the most important structure which was designed by the renowned architect of British era, George Willet. This monument was built to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to India in 1911.
Malabar Hills
One of the plush residential areas in Mumbai is the Malabar hills which give a spectacular view of the city.
Shopping
Mumbai is the best place for shopping where things can be bought at cheap rates. Here, every street and pavements are lined with shops that sell things. The main areas for shopping clothes are Colaba, Fashion Street, kemps corner and more.

Mumbai has a wet and dry tropical climate during most of the months. The months between December and February is considered as cool months. The months during June and September are the rainy seasons

The local trains are considered as the backbone of city transport system. It is controlled by the central and western railways. There are trains that connect Mumbai to the other parts of India.
By Air
Chatrapati Shivaji terminus is the worlds’ second busiest airports in India. The Juhu aerodrome is the first airport in India which has a heliport and flying club.
