Since the creation of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), it has been working tirelessly to boost tourism in the state. Its main aim is to enhance the tourism industry by marketing Maharashtra as a leading destination for global tourism. This in turn helps generate revenue, employment and increases productivity through tourism. MTDC has come up with the award winning promotional campaign- ‘Maharashtra Unlimited’, to highlight the boundless potential that the state has in store.

Maharashtra Tourism (MTDC) was awarded the 'Best Tourism Heritage Award for Ajanta Ellora' at a famous and prestigious Award Ceremony of ‘International Tourism Conclave and Travel Awards’ function which was organized at East Bourne Resort & Spa in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

Apart from this, Maharashtra has also won several other awards for tourism. They are-

Business Tourism Award

In the year 2012, Maharashtra has won the award for Best Indian state for Business Tourism in United Kingdom.

It was the first time that an Indian state had won such a prestigious award at international level. Films featuring Maharashtra as a tourist destination were shown and tourist attractions including beaches, Ajanta and Ellora, shopping and Deccan Odyssey received a lot of appreciation from the people gathered there. Maharashtra tourism was given wonderful publicity in UK and Europe and this will definitely help the growth of international tourism in Maharashtra.

Medical Tourism Award 

Maharashtra also received the Award for Best Medical Tourism Destination in 2011 at IITM- Hyderabad. Before this, Mumbai was also awarded the ‘Best Indian City’ award. This award was given by Conde Nast Traveler India Reader’s Travel award. Dr. Jagdish Patil, MD, MTDC for Maharashtra Tourism, received this prestigious award.

Agro and Rural tourism

On the occasion of World Agro Tourism Day on May 16, 2013, the awards for Agro and Rural Tourism were announced by Maharashtra State Agro and Rural Tourism Cooperative Federation (MART).

India Travel Awards

A Hindi business news channel, CNBC AWAAZ announced winners of the Travel Awards, 2013. These annual awards were held for the seventh time this year in association with Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. Maharashtra grabbed the award for Best Destination for Domestic Travel.
