You will perhaps fall in love with Mukteshwar on your maiden visit to this Himalayan hamlet. The serene calm of the place and enchanting views of the Himalayas are something which will leave you speechless. Mukteshwar, a Himalayan hamlet, is as popular with trekkers as it is with devotees of Lord Shiva. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons owing to which it witnesses a huge influx of visitors throughout the year.

This was the only reason which inspired Jim Corbett who came on a hunting mission here to stay put at Mukteshwar. On a clear day, you can have enchanting views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Trishul and Panchachuli peak from here.

Located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand, Mukteshwar is a major town in upper Himalayan region of the state and is located at an altitude of 2286 meters above mean sea level.

History

Mukteshwar is named after Mukteshwar Dham which is a 350 year old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Mukteshwar finds mention in the famous book “Man Eaters of Kumaon” by Jim Corbett. Jim was so impressed by the serene calmness of this place and visited Mukteshwar on regular basis. Mukteshwar has been a research hub since early days and Indian Veterinary Research Institute was originally established at Mukteshwar.

It was at Mukteshwar that Lord Shiva killed a famous demon who had spread his terror in the region, hence the name Mukteshwar suits aptly to this place.

Climate

Summers are warm and perhaps the best time to visit Mukteshwar. Monsoon season should be avoided as the road connectivity is not very good. Expect heavy snowfall in winters and if you are among those who have an instinct for adventure travel, winters can be your perfect calling.

Things to do

Trekkers can think about climbing the famed peaks like Trishul and Neelkantha at Mukteshwar. Those who wish to try their hand at rock climbing can consider heading to Chauthi ki jali which is known for the same. 

The lazy of the lot can head on easy trails which abound in the region.

Attractions

Shiva Temple

One of the famous temples in Mukteshwar, the Shiva temple also known by the name of Mukteshwar Dham is a major attraction among the visitors. The temple is 350 years old and is a major shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in the region.

Ramgarh

A small town located about 17 km from Mukteshwar, Ramgarh has been home to the legendary writer Mahadevi Verma. The place has ample apple, apricot and peach orchards and you can try the local produce which is farm fresh.

Chauthi ki Jaali

Located on a cliff in Mukteshwar, Chauthi ki Jaali is a perfect place to visit if adventure is on your mind. Guided rock climbing and rappelling activities are held at Chauthi ki Jaali and you can well enrol for a session here.

Brahmeswara Temple

Finely detailed sculptures dating to 1050 can be seen at Brahmeswara temple. The temple is 1 km away from main road and is frequented by tourists and devotees alike.

Shopping

Mukteshwar being a small hamlet, nothing much is found here. However, you can try local rhododendron juice and squash which is available at some of local shops. Pure hand woven shawls and stoles can be bought from Kumaon Grameen Udayog at Kasiyalekh which is located near Mukteshwar.

Accommodation

Mukteshwar is on the tourist circuit in Uttarakhand and the town has some very good staying options. Budget travellers can consider staying at Shri Hari resort which offers basic facilities at competitive prices. For a better experience, you can well consider camping at Frozen Woods, Ramgarh Bungalow or Krishna Orchard resorts to name a few.

How to Reach

By Air

Pantnagar airport located at a distance of 111 km from Mukteshwar is the nearest air link. Taxis can be hired from the airport for a comfortable journey to the town.

By Rail

Kathgodam at a distance of 72 km is the nearest railway station to Mukteshwar. Taxi and bus service is available from Kathgodam and you can choose any option as per your preference.

By Road

Mukteshwar is well connected by road and is an 8 hours drive via Nainital from Delhi. The place is well connected via the road link and can be explored throughout the year.
