Lohaghat

The flush of blooming Rhododendrons is perhaps a sight that can leave any visitor awe struck on a visit to Lohaghat. A town and Nagar Panchayat in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, Lohaghat is a hill station which has numerous spots of tourism and religious interest. Lohaghat is a historic town located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. The town derives its name from Lohawati River which passes through the region.

This is one of the key reasons for Lohaghat to be on the tourist circuit of Uttarakhand and visitors heading to Pithoragarh make a point to stop over at Lohaghat.
Lohaghat is situated at an elevation of 1706 metre and is located at a distance of 14 km from the district headquarter in Champawat.

History

Lohaghat derives its name from Lohawati River which passes through the town. The town has immense religious significance as the famous Advaita Ashram is located in vicinity of Lohaghat. Visitors on way to the ashram make a point to stop over at Lohaghat before heading to the ashram.

Lohaghat is famous for Bhagwal fight carnival which is held in Maa Baarati temple at Devidhura on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Historic records mention a visit by a British naturalist by the name of Barron to Lohaghat in 1841. Barron was so impressed by the natural beauty of the place that he wished that Lohaghat could be developed as the Summer Capital of British India.

Climate

Lohaghat does witness snowfall in winters and if you plan to visit the place during winters, you need to be dressed in heavy woollens. Light woollens or cotton clothes are advisable for summers. Though Lohaghat can be visited at any time of the year, it is best to visit the place from March to June.

Avoid visiting the place during monsoons as road blockades are common and it rains heavily during monsoons.

Things to do

Lohaghat is a walker’s paradise. You can choose to trek along the river banks of Lohawati River or visit the newly constructed temple of Rikeshwar Mahadev which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Ideally, you can choose to stroll through the marketplace which has some local eateries offering cuisine specific to the Kumauni region of Uttarakhand. Khadi bazaar is the main market in Lohaghat and offers a glimpse into urban life of the region.

Attractions

Banasur ka Quila

Located at an elevation of 1859 metres, Banasur ka Qila is in ruins. The age old fort offers an idea of the cultural richness of the region. Lohawati River also originates from a point near this fort. The fort according to legendary myth belonged to demon Banasur, hence named as Banasur ka Qila.

Abbot Mount

Abbot mount needs to be on your travel list if you wish to spend some moments of solitude away from the bustling city crowds. The serene calmness of the place can inspire the creative ones to pen down their feelings. Come over in March and the blossom of Rhododendron will leave a lasting impression on you.

Advaita Ashram

Large numbers of Bengali tourists visit this place primarily as it is associated with Swami Vivekananda. A mission hospital and a library housing literature related to Swami Vivekananda are found in the library at Advaita Ashram.

You can also try visiting Pancheshwar if river rafting and fishing is on your mind.

Shopping

Lohaghat is a small town in Uttarakhand. The market surrounding the bus station is the major market point in the town. You can try some local cuisine at numerous eateries which line the market.

In addition, local handicraft can be purchased from shops located in Khadi bazaar in Lohaghat.

Lohaghat has some budget hotels which can be explored for a comfortable stay. Cedar hotel on Abbott Mount can be considered for a comfortable stay. In addition you can also consider staying at Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Tourist Rest House which provides affordable stay options to the visitors.

How to Reach

By Air

Pantnagar Airport which is 170 km from Lohaghat is the nearest airport. Taxis can be hired from the airport for a comfortable journey.

By Rail

Tanakpur railway station at a distance of 89 km from Lohagarh is the nearest railhead. Taxis and bus service is available at the railway station for Lohaghat and you can choose as per your convenience.

By Road

Lohaghat is well connected by the road route and lies on the way to Champawat which is 14 km from Lohaghat. You can choose to travel by taxis or Uttarakhand State Road Transport Corporation which serves the region.
