Landour

Landour is a small town located adjacent to the Mussoorie cantonment at a distance of 35 km and at an altitude of approximately 7000 feet. Mussoorie and Landour are the most prominent twin hill stations of the British Era located in Uttarakhand state. Both these hill stations are together termed as the ‘Queen of Hills’. Landour has been named after a village Llanddowror located in the South west Wales. British believed in establishing their ethnicity and supremacy by naming the places as per the names of places of British, Irish and Scottish origin.

Landour History

During the British Era, Landour was part of the United Provinces which was formed from the North West province of Bengal Presidency. The aim of the British in developing the Landour region was to cater for the requirement of British Indian Army. The first permanent building in Landour region was built by Capt Young in 1825 who has the distinction of being the first Commandant of the Gorkha battalion and discoverer of Mussoorie. The year 1825 witnessed the major construction works to transform the place into a cantonment. Landour has a sanatorium built in the British period which is now part of the ITM Mussoorie a wing of DRDO. In the early 20th century, a full fledge Military Hospital was established in the area to combat tropical disease. This hospital stopped functioning after India’s Independence in 1947.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

Landour is situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The monsoon in the region brings heavy rainfall and it rains almost daily.  The rainy season extends from Jul to September. The post monsoon season transforms the area into lush green. April and June months are the summer months when temperature touches 30 degrees in day time and dips to almost 10 degrees at night. October to February is the winter months in the region with good amount of snowfall. The area is one of the largest snow fall receiving regions in the Uttarakhand state.

Skating

Skating is an excellent sport for fun and speed lovers. There are several skating rinks in Mussoorie including the largest skating rink of the country.

Adventure and Nature Walk

This is an excellent opportunity for people especially coming from hectic city schedule to be part of nature at its best. The thick Himalayan forest and wildlife like spotted deer, langurs and varieties of birds provide utmost merriment. The scenic beauty of the Himalayas and breathtaking views provide complete satisfaction and exultation to the visitors

Boating

Fun lovers can be part of the exciting boating experience in Municipal garden boat club. The club has a lush green surrounding with an artificial lake filled with crystal clear water.

Attractions

Kempty Falls

It is located at a distance of 40 km from Landour. It is a beautiful waterfall where water falls from a height of 40 feet from the mountain providing thrilling experience to the onlookers.

Gun Hill

Gun Hill is a popular tourist attraction located at a distance of 4.5 km from Landour with historical importance. It is believed that a canon was fired in the afternoon for time keeping for the local residents from this place.

Lal Tibba

Lal Tibba is located in the Landour area and it is the highest point in Mussoorie. This place has a camp of the Indian Military Academy.

Clock Tower

This clock tower located at the entrance of Landour Bazaar does not have much of historical importance, but it marks the boundary of Landour and Mussoorie. This was demolished in the year 2011 and is being planned to be rebuilt.

Kellogg Church

Built in the Indo-Gothic style. It was built in the year 1903 a symbol of British architecture.

St. Paul’s Church

An Anglican church built in 1840 is a place where Jim Corbett’s parents got married.

Shopping

Landour Bazaar

Tourists can enjoy the Landour Bazaar which is open between 9 am to 8 pm. This market is famous for the local made shoes.

U.P Cottage and Village Industries

The other exciting place for shopaholics is the U.P Cottage and village Industries. Local handicrafts, Imitation Jewellery, Designer purses, belts and wallets are available here at attractive prices.

Library Bazaar

Library Bazaar located in Gandhi Chowk region is also an ideal shopping destination. But do utilize your bargaining skills in this market to get the items at a lesser price.

Classic Emporium

This emporium near Landour is famous for home decorative, candles, Tibetian handicrafts, porcelain materials, designer walk sticks and wooden articles. This is a four decade old emporium attracting thousands of tourists who visit this region.    

Accommodation

Devdar Woods, Ivy bank guest house are the two prominent hotels in Landour Cantt. Tourists can also accommodate themselves in Mussoorie which offers excellent range of hotels. In Mussoorie tourists can find hotels ranging from budget to expensive resorts.  

How to Reach

By Road

Mussoorie is the nearest major bus station to Landour which is well connected with Dehradun. There are frequent bus services from most of the cities of Uttarakhand and Delhi. Apart from the Government Bus, private vehicles also run regularly between prominent cities. Tour operators conduct one day tour from neighboring Uttar Pradesh state also.

By Air

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is located at a distance of approximately 60 km from Dehradun. This airport has good connectivity with Delhi and other cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. Tourists can take a taxi from the airport to reach Landour via Mussoorie.  

By Train

Landour can be reached from Delhi by boarding trains connecting Dehra Dun. The Dehradun railway stations falls in the Northern Railway of the Indian Railways and is well connected with cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Haridwar, Saharanpur, Amritsar and Mumbai. The Shatabdi Express and Mussoorie Express are the best options. There are also certain overnight trains. Trains usually take five hours from Delhi. All the trains pass through Haridwar. The distance between Dehradun railway station and Landour is approximately 40 km which can be travelled using private buses or hired taxis.
