Kullursandai Reservoir

Kullursandai Reservoir is built across the river Kowsiga, which is a tributary of Arjuna River. This reservoir is situated in Tamil Nadu in the Virudhunagar District. This reservoir offers various activities to tourists such as trekking, bird watching and boating. People come here mainly to watch huge number of migratory birds and water birds, which is the main attraction of this area. The most appropriate time to visit this place is during August to February.

The name of the dam is Kullursandai Dam and the nearest city to this dam is Aruppukottai. The basic name given to this place is east flowing rivers between Kanyakumari and Pennar. This reservoir is formed from the river Vaippar. The type of the dam is earthen and the purpose for which it is built is irrigation. The dimension of the dam is 3207 meters in terms of length and eight meters in terms of height. The length of the spillway is one hundred and forty-three meters and the crest level of spillway is 30.2. The area in which this dam is built is considered as Seismic II zone.

Tourism

Mariamman Koil

Mariamman temple was built in 1923. Tourist can see large congregation of people in the month of Panguni when Panguni Utthram festival is celebrated for 21 days.

Bhuminathaswamy Temple

This temple is located on the southern side of Gundar. This temple is one of fourteen famous Shaiva centres in Pandya nadu. This temple is situated around forty kilometres from Virudhunagar, and is around forty-five kilometres south of Madurai. Name of the Goddess in this temple is Thunaimalai Aman and the name of the God is Bhuminathar. Swami Vivekananda stayed in this temple for three days when Gundar River was on flood.

Ramana Maharishi Ashram

Sri Ramana Maharishi was born in Thiruchuli in 1879. He lived in the house of Sundara Mandhiram and studied in Sethupathi Primary School. There are eight kinds of lingas and nine kinds of theerthas in the temple here. This temple is located on the state highway of parthipanu and Srivilliputur.

Shenbagathope Grizzled Squirrel Sanctuary

This forest is located on the eastern side of the Western Ghats. Only a small portion of the total area is under forest. This place is home to numerous rare and endemic varieties of birds and animals. The wildlife sanctuary is spread across an area of 480 square kilometres. On the north-western side of this sanctuary is the Megamalai reserve and the south-western side is the Periyar tiger reserve.

Pilavakkal Dam

There are two sections of this dam – the Kovilar dam and the Periyar dam. The area around both the gardens has beautiful gardens. Tourists can enjoy boating at this place and enjoy the beautiful natural beauty around this place.

Ayyanar Falls

On the eastern side of Western Ghats is located a beautiful waterfall known by the name Ayyanar. This fall has beautiful scenery around it and is a perfect place for spending peaceful time or with friends and family. The best time to visit this fall is from September to January.

By Air

The nearest airport to Virudhunagar is 35 kms away at Madurai.

By Rail

Virudhunagar is readily connected through rail and some of the major stations connected to this place are Tulukapatti which is around 12 kms from here and Sivakasi which is around 25 kms from here.

By Road

Virudhunagar is a famous place in Tamil Nadu and is well connected by road to all the major cities in Tamil Nadu.
