Solaiyar Dam

Located in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, Solaiyar Dam is situated near Valapari, which is a popular hill station in Anaimalai Hills of Tamil Nadu. This reservoir dam is the 2nd deepest Dam in Asia. It is a hydroelectric plant as well. Hence, permission is needed to visit the dam.

The Dam is around 55 km from Chalkudy. As the place is surrounded by hills, visitors enjoy  the beautiful views and natural surroundings. This is a perfect spot for a peaceful trip with family and friends.

Hydrography

The Solaiyar dam is an important reservoir under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project. The water storage capacity is about 160 ft. The overflowing waters of the reservoir are let into the Parambikulam Reservoir all the way through the saddle dam.

History

It is built by a team who was working under K Palanisamy, the most admired engineers in that region.

Tourism

The dam is an excellent example of engineering skills. It is a must visit picnic spot. Tourists can enjoy an overnight stay in the forest rest houses. A treetop house offers a really enjoyable space for the nature and adventure lovers.

Nirar Dam is located 15 km from Valparai. Tourists enjoy a very high rainfall in the months of June and July.

How To Reach

Valparai is located 64 km from Pollachi and 55 km from Chalakudy. The Chalakudy Railway Station is the nearest railhead to the Dam.
