Shaheedi Jor Mela

This is an important festival of Punjab celebrated with great pomp and show for three days. The main idea behind celebrating Shaheedi Jor Mela is to pay tribute to the martyrdom of Baba Fateh Singh Ji and Baba Zorawar Singh Ji. Lacs of tourists from different parts of the world come here to offer tribute to the great martyrs.

Baba Fateh Singh Ji and Baba Zorawar Singh Ji were the two martyrs of Great Guru Gobind Singh Ji, known for their brave and daring acts. These martyrs are highly respected in Sikh religion because they projected unshaken patriotism and belief in the previous era for Sikh religion. Since then these two martyrs have been given a special place in the history of Sikhism.

These martyrs were offered treasures, luxury and comfort of a lifetime by the then governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan on the condition that they converted to Islam. But greed could not overtake the supreme and divine faith of these martyrs on Sikhism and they rejected the offer ardently. Later, the martyrs were entombed alive and also bricked in a wall as part of the punishment for refusing the offer of conversion to Islam.

The fear of death could not shake the faith of martyrs of Sikhism reflecting their exemplary courage. These martyrs survived their punishment but mercilessly got sacrificed in Sirhind on 26th December, 1705. The death of these martyrs left an indelible print on the minds of the followers of Sikhism.

Significance of Shaheedi Jor Mela

Every year in the month of December, a large number of devotees flock to Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup and Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib to pay homage and tribute to the two famous Sikh Gurus. The main idea behind celebrating this festival is to glorify the life of these holy Sikh gurus by offering those prayers and to enlighten the young generation about sacrifices of the famous gurus Baba Fateh Singh Ji and Baba Zorawar Singh Ji.

Date of Shaheedi Jor Mela

Shaheedi Jor Mela is celebrated to uphold the sacrifices made by martyrs Baba Fateh Singh Ji and Baba Zorawar Singh Ji for Sikh religion. Since the martyrs died in December, the Mela is organized during that month for three consecutive days. The celebration of Shaheedi Jor Mela starts from 24th of December and continues till 26th December. People from surrounding villages make a wholehearted contribution and also participate actively in the festival to make it a success every year. Both the gurudwaras are decorated in a splendid manner to appeal to devotees.

Celebration of Shaheedi Jor Mela

Shaheedi Jor Mela is celebrated for three consecutive days in the month of December in a very religious manner. During the first day of the Mela, an Akhand Paath is held for devotees. The people of the village arrange a Langar at gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib during the three days at Shaheedi Jor Mela.

The entire gurudwara is decorated using lights for a splendor and grandeur that mesmerizes every visitor to this place. The gurudwara decorated with lights looks like a celestial body in the darkness of the night. Apart from Sikhs, people from different religion also come here to enjoy the festive ambience in the month of December.

The second day of festival sees a large number of political rallies and meetings organized by the local devotees of the region in a grand manner. People sing and dance along the rally to create a festive and amusing atmosphere on the second day of Shaheedi Jor Mela. On the third day of the Mela, Sikh devotees organize a nagarkirtan and it starts from Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib and ends at Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup.

Shaheedi Jor Mela and Fairs

The cooperation and enthusiasm of locals is seen during the mela in terms of cooking and the affection and fervor with which they serve food to devotees and tourists. Tourists visiting Shaheedi Jor Mela carry back warmth and affection from the people of this region. During processions and rallies, the local people provide snacks, drinks and meals to tourists participating in the procession. It is really appealing to see people from distant places come to the place to offer tribute and also become a part of the community service to get the blessings of the holy gurus of Sikhism.

Customs and Traditions

One of the most important customs of Shaheedi Jor Mela is organizing an Akhand Paath for devotees of the gurudwara. It is a religious fair which is celebrated with faith and belief to get the blessings of the divine souls who were martyred in Sirhind. People come together to celebrate the valor of brave Sikh Gurus and also to pay homage to them.

Shaheedi Jor Mela Rituals at Gurudwara

Apart from Akhand Paath that’s organized in gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib, a three-day Langar is organized in the community kitchen of the gurudwara for devotees. An idea behind Akhand Paath is to glorify the sacrifices of Sikh martyrs and also to offer prayers to the divine souls.

Shaheedi Jor Mela Processions

On the second and third day of the festival, political rallies and processions are held from Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup. The procession is elaborate and held in a splendid manner. Even during chilly winters, a large number of devotees and tourists participate in the procession with enthusiasm and spontaneity. As such Shaheedi Jor Mela is famous all over the world for its procession and festivals.
