Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela

The Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela is organized at Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib every year. The gurudwara is located in the district of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab. The Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela is also known as the Shaheedi Jor Mela. The mela is attended by people from different classes. The Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib is situated about 5Km from Sirhind and is the site of live burial of the two children of Guru Gobind Singh.

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib consists of several shrines and gurudwaras. Some of the gurudwaras located inside the complex include the Gurudwara Bhora Sahib, Gurudwara Shahid Ganj, Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri, Todar Mal Jain Hall and the Sarovar or water tank. The entrance of the complex was constructed in 1952 on the instructions of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh. The original wall where sons of the Guru were buried stands till date. The shrine containing the wall is the Gurudwara Bhora Sahib.

The site of Gurudwara Shahid Ganj and the Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri is where the sons of the Guru and their mother were imprisoned. This place is also called as the Thanda Burj because of its cool temperatures. But since they were confined in the area during the winters, their confinement was quite torturous. This is also the spot where Mata Gujri fainted after hearing about the sacrifice of her sons. The Gurudwara Burj Mata Gujri has been built on this site.

About a kilometre further from Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib is Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup. This is the site where the sons of the Guru and Mata Gujri were immolated. Wazir Khan did not allow cremation if the land was bought by placing gold coins over it. The place was bought by Seth Todar Mal. He was a follower of the Guru.

Significance of Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela is organized to mark the execution of the younger children the Guru. The sons were unlawfully taken as prisoners by Wazir Khan who was the administrator of Sirhind. Wazir Khan killed them because they refused to accept Islam. Since then, the fair is conducted every year to remember this sacrifice. The sahibzadas were first buries alive but the walls could not sustain them and bricks and mortar fell apart. The next day Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh were martyred in Sirhind. It is said that Baba Fateh Singh was only 6 years old when he sacrificed his life.

Date of Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela

The Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela is observed every year in the month of December from 25th to 28th. The fair is observed over a period of three days.

Celebration of Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela

On the first day, an Akhand path at Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup and langars are organized. On this day, there is also an exhibition of various government agencies. A special acoustics and illumination programme is organized in Sirhind which showcases the history of the area. The next day sees several political assemblies and meetings. Stages are set close to the gurudwaras from where politicians give speeches and talk about the sacrifice. The last day nagar kirtans and processions from Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib till Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup are organized.

Customs & Traditions

Special arrangements are done to mark the occasion of the Shaheedi Jor Mela. The district administration arranges for parking areas, regulation of traffic and also makes medical and emergency services. Even though the Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib Jor Mela is a religious event security is well taken care of with police force positioned all around the site of the mela.

A procession is taken out from Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib with a Golden Palanquin. The palanquin is decorated with flowers in the memory of the Sahibzadas. Martial art performances are common during the procession. This local art form is popular as the Gatika Play. Throughout the distance that the procession lasts, the artists continue their performance with full rigour and enthusiasm.

The mela is attended by millions of devotees who throng to the Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib and the Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup. The villagers organize langars for all the pilgrims visiting Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib. People from far off places come to Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib to offer their services and prepare food and provide water and tea to the pilgrims.
