In Memory Of a Great Freedom Fighter and Prime Minister Of India

Vijay Ghat is the memorial of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India. “Vijay” means “Victory.” The memorial was named after India attained victory over Pakistan in the 1965 war under his Prime Ministership.

Vijay Ghat is located near Raj Ghat on Mahatma Gandhi Road, also called main Ring Road. This is on the banks of River Yamuna on the south east side of Red Fort.

The memorial is the spot where the Prime Minister was cremated. Prayer services are conducted annually on his birth anniversary, which falls on October 2, and death anniversary, which falls on January 11. The memorial is visited by international dignitaries and heads of state.

History

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was born in 1901. He was a freedom fighter and a competent statesman. He led several defiant campaigns and even spent years in British jails, a total of seven years.

Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi had awarded him with the Bachelor’s degree “Shastri” for his academic achievements. He is remembered for his famous slogan: “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.”

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri played a productive role in the nation’s governance after Independence. He is known as a man of high integrity. He was humble and represented the “aam admi” or common man of India. He occupied several significant positions before becoming the Prime Minister of India. He was a great visionary who, with his dedicated efforts, led India to the path of socio-economic brilliance.

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri passed away in 1966 due to a massive heart attack. This happened on a peace mission to Tashkent in Russia. His last rites were conducted at Vijay Ghat, meaning “Victory Bank.” He is the first person to be awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’ posthumously.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Delhi is between October and March. The city offers pleasant weather during these months, except December and January, which are cold months. Yet, tourists can enjoy the winter sun.

Vijay Ghat is easily reachable by auto rickshaws, cabs, local buses, and metro train. The nearest metro station is Kashmiri Gate Metro Station.
