Tsunami Monument

This is one of the most exclusively designed and coloured memorial, that's 16 foot tall and commemorates the day when Tsunami in Asia claimed countless lives. The sad incident took place on 26 December 2004, when huge waves of Indian Ocean hit the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Nicobar Islands, Andaman and the South East Asian countries. This monument, built in the memory of people who lost their lives in Tsunami, is a vital attraction for the people who come to Tamil Nadu from across the globe. They pay homage to these people.

The monument shows two hands, one of which is holding a gigantic blue wave and the other is encircling a lamp reflecting hope in the structure. The lamp is made of steel having a black tomb like structure recording the date and its significance. As you take a walk around the structure and the surrounding area, you will experience a feeling of complete peace and calm revealing that though the human race has advanced a lot, the nature always has the last say.

History

The creation of the Tsunami Monument traces its roots to the devastating Asian Tsunami that hit the shores of Chennai on December 26, 2004, swept away countless lives and left a huge number of people in darkness and despair of homelessness. The areas of Nagapattinam and Tirunelveli, among many places were the worst hit ones when the sudden fury of nature struck down lives in the early morning hours and resulted in huge property damage as well. 2013 saw Chennai, commemorating this incident with Memorial service and the fishermen organised prayer services for the deceased and poured milk in the sea at the Marina to show their respects for the ones who lost their lives in the catastrophe.
