Aranthangi Fort

A unique specialty of the Aranthangi fort is that a Hindu temple designed in 11th century constructed by Rajendra Chola lies in its vicinity. The ruined fort lies in Aranthangi which is considered to be Tamil Nadu’s second largest village. Aranthangi Fort is located in Aranthangi in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu. The 16th century AD fort has been built by Tondaiman Kings.

History

Though not much is known about the historical significance of Aranthangi fort, a track created by Tondaiman do exist in the fort, giving some hint of its evolutionary status. Tondaiman were the feudal chiefs who ruled over Aranthangi during the 15th to 18th century. It is widely believed that the Tondaiman created this fort with the assistance of the British. Their role in assisting the British in winning over the legendary king Tipu Sultan is also noted in the historical documents.

Architecture

The fact which makes the Aranthangi fort special is that the same has been made using mud fillings and the use of stone and bricks has been kept to the minimal. The fort does not have any evidence of any wreck of other palaces within, which is quite common in the region in other forts and palaces.

By Air

The nearest airport is at Tiruchirapalli which lies at a distance of 60 km from the Aranthangi fort. Taxis can be hired from the airport for a comfortable ride to the fort.

By Train

Pudukottai is the nearest railway station to Aranthangi fort. The fort lies on Chennai-Rameshwaram rail link and the place has fairly good railway connectivity.

By Road

Pudukottai is the nearest town to Aranthangi fort and is well connected by the road route. The place is well connected to major towns as Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Thanjavur. Local buses and auto rickshaw can be hired from Pudukottai to plan a comfortable visit to the Aranthangi fort.
