Gandhi Mandapam
Kanyakumari is a beautiful place with many things to explore. One of the beautiful monuments here is the Gandhi Mandapam and this is built in the honor of Mahatma Gandhi. You can witness a miracle that takes place here on the 2nd of October every year and this is mainly the sun rays that fall on stone that is near to the place where his ashes were actually help. This monument is unique and it is undoubtedly an architectural wonder.
History
This marks the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who has made a visit to Kanyakumari during the years of 1925 and 1937. This is constructed across the seashore and it is closely situated to the Kumari Amman Temple and this was the place where his ashes were kept for the sake of public darshan before immersing it in the sea on the February 12th, 1948. Gandhi Mandapam was completed in 1956 and the central shape of this monument is 79 feet high and this in fact represents the age of this renowned freedom fighter. This monument was later transferred to administrative control of Public Works Department of the state during 1978.
Architecture
The monument is known to be built in the Orissa style architecture and is known to be beautiful designed. A visit here will surely provide you with a soothing feel. It is known to be built in such a way that, on the 2nd of October, the rays of sun would directly fall on the place, where his ashes were kept and this is through a hole over the roof.
