Education

As per a survey done recently, it has been found that Punjab gave an active response to the Sarva Shiksha Programme which was a national effort to remove illiteracy from the country. The efforts of central as well as state government played an important role in bringing the literacy rate to 70%. Maximum people in the state are getting quality education. The management of education system is done in a tired form. The three orders of the education system are primary education, secondary education and college education. Many institutions providing higher education are located in Punjab. These institutes impart undergraduate as well as post graduate courses in all the major streams.

Punjab Agricultural University is a well-known institute for agriculture, worldwide. An important role was played by this institute during the Punjab’s Green Revolution in 1960s and 70s. The present prime Minister of India Mr. Manmohan Singh is an alumnus of the Punjab University. Dr. Hargobind Khurana has also gained his studied from the same University. Christian Medical College located in Ludhiana is the oldest medical institution of the country which was established in the year 1894.

For pupils aged between six to eleven, education is free and compulsory. In state schools, free secondary education is also provided.

There are various state universities in Punjab. Panjab University (1956) in Chandigarh, Guru Nanak Dev University (1969) in Amritsar, Punjab Agricultural University (1962) in Ludhiana, Punjabi University (1962) in Patiala, Punjab Technical University (1997) in Jalandhar etc is the major ones. Moreover, there are more than two hundred technical institutes and specialized colleges.

Punjab Technical University

Punjab Technical University or PTU was established on January 16th 1997 by a State Legislature’s Act, with an aim of promoting technical, pharmaceutical and management education. The University is having one hundred and eight engineering colleges, one hundred and fifty six management colleges, ninety six pharmacy colleges, sixty eight architecture colleges, forty two colleges of hotel management and more than three hundred centers for distance education. New initiatives have been taken by the university n providing technical education with the help of the latest trends in the industry. Students get maximum opportunities and interaction with the technology leaders.

Digital Library of Punjab

As a result of the digital revolution in the state of Punjab in the year 2003, the Punjab Digital Library was formed. The library is under Nanakshahi Trust. This trust has been founded by some unknown young people with an approach of preserving the heritage of Punjab for the coming generations. Initially, it was an organization with three employees but by 2006, it expanded into a prominent NGO working for digital preservation in the entire country. This library is the largest source of digital data of Punjab.
