The town of Hoshiarpur is located at the foot of the Shivalik Range. The town was established in the 4th century. The history of the area and its inhabitation dates back to the Palaeolithic age. The rich history of the area has given rise to several ancient monuments and structures. The area also has several archaeological remains. The favourable environment of the area has also made the region rich in vegetation. The slopes of the Shivalik Range are known to house the Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary, which is covered with dry deciduous forests and moist deciduous scrubs and chir pine forests.

The Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary is within easy reach of the town of Hoshiarpur. The sanctuary is one of the most popular destinations in the area. Known for housing a large variety of flora and fauna, the sanctuary also attracts a wide variety of avifauna. The Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 956 acres. Out of the 956 acres about 498 acres belong to the Talkni Village and 458 acres is a part of the Rehmapur Village. The sanctuary is the true representation of the Ecosystem of the foothills of Shivalik.

The sanctuary is home to several species of animals and birds. Some of the species of animals seen in the area include jackal, hog deer, hare, jungle cat, kalij pheasant, wild boar, etc. The area is also visited by several migratory and native birds of the area. Visitors to the sanctuary can enjoy amazing views of nature and wildlife in their natural habitat. The rich flora of the area also supports numerous varieties of insects and reptiles that thrive in the area. For bird lovers and nature lovers, the Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful place to visit. Visitors should carry their binoculars and cameras when visiting the sanctuary.

History

The Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary was established as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1993 under the Punjab Government Notification No. 34. The final notification for the sanctuary was released in 1999. The area gained a lot of importance after its establishment and since then has been visited by people from across India and the globe.

The Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary supports a variety of flora and fauna and is a wonderful place to visit. The sanctuary is the main reason why people visit Hoshiarpur. The favourable surroundings of the sanctuary attract several species of birds and make it a wonderful destination for bird lovers.

Porcupine, Indian Wild Boar, Mongoose, Jackal, Hog Deer, Jungle Cat, Sambar, Hare, Barking Deer, Indian Pangolin, Python, Garden Lizard, Monitor Lizard, Rat Snake, Red Jungle Fowl.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary is the winter months from October to March. The temperatures during this time are mild and cold making it convenient for visitors to travel around and visit the sanctuary.

The temperature during the summer months are uncomfortable and this time is not recommended for visiting the sanctuary.

How To Reach Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary

The Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary is located close to the town of Hoshiarpur. The sanctuary is about 15 Km from Hoshiarpur. Buses, taxis and local transport can be availed from the town to reach the sanctuary. Hoshiarpur has its own railway station which is connected to different cities of the country. The Hoshiarpur railway station is located on the Jalandhar Railway line and offers direct trains to Ferozpur, Amritsar and Delhi.

Hoshiarpur is conveniently connected by a large road network from different parts of Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and other surrounding states.

The closest airport to the sanctuary is in Amritsar (100 Km) and Ludhiana (95 Km). From both the cities visitors can reach Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary easily by bus, taxi or private car.
