Poanta Sahib

Paonta Sahib is a small industrial town located in the Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is one of the important religious places for Sikhs too. It houses many major industries such as Cement Corporation of India, Ranbaxy and Malwa Cotton and Spinning Mills. It houses one of the most visited Gurudwaras in the country, Gurudwara Paonta Sahib on the banks of River Yamuna. This river forms the boundary between the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This small town is situated on national highway 72 and thus well connected with other parts of the nation by road.

History

The original name of this town was Paontikka. Paon means feet in Hindi language and the local language and Tikka mean being stable. It is believed that the horse upon which Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhs travelling stopped at this place and not willing to move. Sensing the wish of the almighty, the Guru decided to discontinue his journey and decided to stay over here for quite some time. He wrote many Holy Scriptures while staying here and then moved to Anandpur Sahib. The town has relation with the Sikh leader Banda Bahadur too.

Attractions

Gurudwara Paonta Sahib is the main attraction here. It is believed that the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh wrote Dasam Granth here. That is why it is highly regarded by Sikhs. The river Yamuna which borders the town is another attraction here. Most of the visitors enjoy a holy bath in this river. Besides there is a Vishwakarma Temple too in this town, that attracts many Hindu pilgrims.

Ruins of the erstwhile princely state of Sirmouri are very near to this town. The legend says that the kingdom has been ruined by the curse of a court dancer.

Best Time to Visit

Any time during the year is considered to be the best time to visit. Still winters are not preferred as it will be severe due to the proximity to Himalayas.
