Goripalayam Mosque

Goripalayam Mosque, a Muslim enclave in Madurai is believed to have existed in the city for several centuries now. Some even believe that this mosque existed even before Malik Kafur visited Madurai on a rampage in the early years of 14th century. This mosque is located on the Vaigai River’s northern bank and is quite famous for the stone pillars which have been built in the Hindu architectural style.

The name Goripalayam is derived from a Persian word “Gor” which means grave. This mosque has been given this name as graves of the two famous Islamic rulers and saints of Madurai are sited here. These include Hazarat Sultha Shamshuddin Badshah and Hazarat Sulthan Alauddin Badshah. It is believed that this mosque also possesses an invisible grave of Hazrat Khaja Syed Sultan Habibuddin Raz.

History

This mosque was built by Thirumalai Nayakar and it is one of the biggest mosques in the city of Madurai. The inscriptions on the Mosque are considered to be the proof of the fact that this Dargah is in existence since 13th century.

Architecture

One of the distinctive features of this grand mosque is its pillars which have been built in the Hindu architectural style. Its dome is another attraction of the mosque as it has been built from a single block of stone which is 20 feet in height and 70 feet in diameter.

Festivals

An annual Urus festival, which is celebrated with great fervor, is conducted on the 15th day of the month of Rabi-Al-Awwal. Several followers of Islam come to seek blessings in this mosque from far and near.

Best time to Visit

The best time to visit the mosque is between October – March, or during the annual festival which is celebrated here.

How to Reach

By Train

The nearest rail head to the Mosque is located in Madurai itself and after reaching here, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the Mosque. There are three railway stations in the city including Kudalnagar, Tirupparangundram and Madurai Junction.

By Road

Madurai has a well developed network of road from the other major cities and towns of south India. One can board public transport or Volvo buses from the nearby cities and towns to reach Madurai.

By Air

The nearest airport is located in Madurai and lies at a distance of 10 Km from the main city. Taxis are easily available here to reach the Mosque.
