Between 120 and 270 miles (200 and 440 km) from the southwest coastal region of India, lies the Lakshadweep (earlier known as Laccadive, Amindivi and Minicoy Islands, present in the Laccadive Sea). The Union Territory, archipelago is controlled by Indian Government. Otherwise referred to be Laccadive Islands, it is located exactly at the centre among all the subgroups. The name is derived from Sanskrit language ‘Lakshadweepa’ meaning ‘One hundred thousand islands’ which means the same in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and also others. This island being the smallest Indian Union Territory covers a total area of 12 sq. mi (32 sq. km). The economic area covers an area of 150,000 sq mi (400,000 sq. km), territorial water of 7,700 sq. mi (20,000 sq. km) and lagoon area has occupied 1,600 sq. mi (4,200 sq. km). It forms a sole Indian district covering 10 sub divisions. The capital of this region is Kavaratti that is under the Kerala High Court jurisdiction. The northern region of Maldives-Lakshadweep-Chagos cluster of islands lays this island at the head of huge underwater mountain range, Chagos-Laccadive Ridge.

This archipelago covers 36 islands covering total area of thirty two sq km. It consists of 10 unoccupied islands, 5 submerged banks, 3 reefs and 12 atolls. The capital being Kavaratti is the major town of UT. These islands are located about 220 to 440 km from coastal region of Kochi in the Indian state of Kerala. The beauty of this place is enhanced through sandy beaches, huge collection of fauna and flora, beautiful landscapes and absence of busy lifestyle.

There are regular flights to this island from Kochi. There is an option for helicopter transfer between Agatti and Kavaratti round the year. Tropical climate prevails in this region with an average temperature between 27 and 32 degree Celsius. Both April and May are the hottest months with average temperature being 32 degree Celsius. Basically there is humid warm climate except monsoon. There will be equitable climate during monsoon season, banning all ship-based tourism. The best time to visit this island is between October and March. The time between June and October month witness average South West rainfall between the range of 10 and 40 mm. There will be 70 to 75% of relative humidity. There will be decrease in the annual rainfall towards South to North. About 80 to 90 days are rainy in a year. There will be moderate winds between October and March.
