Andaman & Nicobar Island

The group of Andaman & Nicobar Islands is situated in a territory of 150km. They are given the geographical recognition of “Union Territory of India” and are found in the Bay of Bengal. The Andaman Sea separates these islands from the countries like Thailand and Burma. It is situated towards the northern part of Aceh in the Indonesian province. Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands are the two main groups of islands here.  A ten-degree latitude separates these two islands.  While the former is located towards the North, the latter is located towards the South.

In the midst of blue seas, these islands look like emeralds filled with natural extravaganza that makes the tourists go spellbound. This Union Territory stretches across an area of 700km from the North to the South of the Bay of Bengal. Though there are many small islands located along this line, only 36 of them are inhabited. Andaman & Nicobar Islands was earlier known for the deadly prison where Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned. It is because of the presence of this prison that this place was known as Kalapani, which can be literally translated as black waters. Today, Andaman & Nicobar Islands are perfect evidences of a rich Stone Age culture. Remote, scenic beaches, unbelievable coral and some of the best marine species are the trademarks of these islands today.

The North Latitude towards which these islands are located is between 6 and 14 degrees and the East Longitude towards which these islands are located is between 92 and 94 degrees. There is a whopping 572 small and big islands in this group. The entire territory of these islands stretches up to 3070sq miles or 7950sq km. The Saddle Peak, situated at an altitude of 732m above sea level, is the highest peak in these islands. There are around 325 and 4 prominent islands in the Andaman and Nicobar groups respectively. While the total area of Andaman Islands is around 6170sq km, the total area of Nicobar Islands is around 1765sq km.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a group of islands where aquatic life is at its best. The impeccable corals, rare and exotic aquatic beings and the placid blue waters of the beaches are major tourist hot-spots in these islands.
