Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh is an important city located on the banks of river Rohini and Rapti. This city is located 265 kms to the east of Lucknow, the state capital. It is a peaceful city and there are many places of interest in Gorakhpur. The museums in Gorakhpur are special because of their historical importance and the place is associated with the life and activities of Gorakhnath. Gorakhpur has always been a land of prehistoric magnificence and religious studies. There are many museums, holy places and monuments in this place. One would get to buy a lot of handicrafts items like the terracotta horses and handmade embroidery products with lovely patterns. Kushinagar and Kapilavastu are the other places which one can visit when in Gorakhpur. Rajkiya Baudh Sangrahalaya is an important museum in Gorakhpur. This museum was established in the year 1987 mainly to preserve miscellaneous elements. The museum is located at Ramgarh Tal in Gorakhpur and there are many interesting articles displayed in this museum.

The Commerce Museum is an educational museum established in the year 1969 and is maintained by the State Commerce University. The Museum remains closed on public holidays. The articles on display are charts, pictures, graphs, photo-specimens and samples.  Puratatva Sanghralaya displays ancient manuscripts and documents and is the ideal place for archaeologists and historians. The Archaeological Museum run by the University of Gorakhpur is the other one of the best places to visit in Gorkahpur. Apart from the museums there are many holy places to visit in Gorakhpur. These holy places are frequented by devotees from different parts of the country and world. The old Hanuman temple called the Hanuman Garhi and the old Vishnu temple are the main places to visit.

The museum exhibits objects like stone articles, bronze sculptures, metal objects, terracotta articles, pottery, manuscripts, miniature paintings, ivory products, thankas, punch mark coins, wooden objects, various dimension of art, postal stamps, photographs, and many other interesting articles.

The important galleries are Rahul Sanskritiyan art gallery, Hindu sculpture gallery, Terracotta art gallery, Jain art gallery and various dimensions of Art.

Visitor Information

The museum is open on all days except Mondays. The working hours are between 10 am and 5 pm. The museum organises many school programs, film shows, lectures and many other activities. Photography is allowed only for research work and prior permission has to be taken.

How To Reach

The city can be reached through air, rail or road. However it is better connected through road and rail.

By Road

Road transport is available to all the key cities of Uttar Pradesh from Gorakhpur. You also get buses to Delhi, Kanpur and many other cities.

By Train

The city is well connected to all the other main cities in India by rail. Many major trains like Shaheed Express, Vaishali Express, Amarnath Express, Amrapali Express, Purvanchal Express, Ahmedabad Express, Sabarmati Express and many more train operates through Gorakhpur.

By Air

Daily flights operate from Kolkata and Delhi via Lucknow. The airports near the place are Varanasi and Lucknow.
