Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar

The Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is named after Bharat Ratna Govind Ballabh Pant, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.  He was an activist during the time of independence and even contributed for establishing Hindi as the national language. This is the largest manmade reservoir situated in southern part of Sonebhadra and is the pride of Uttar Pradesh. It is on the river Rihand a main tributary of Ganges. The river is around 784 kilometer long.

The construction was done during 1954-1962 the main purpose of which was to generate hydroelectric power of around 300 megawatt. Now U.P. Hydroelectricity Corporation Ltd. manages it. The height of the dam is around 91.44 m and length of around 934 m. The water stored in this dam is released on periodical basis onto River Son for irrigational necessities all through the year. It has in total 61 joints and ground blocks. Since the establishment of the dam, Sonebhadra is called the energy capital of India. It is responsible for generating over 10000MW of electricity and distributing it all over the North Indian States.

Location

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is located around the southern part Sonebhadra, Uttar Pradesh.  It is about 5km from Renukut situated on Renukut-Shaktinagar road at Pipari- in between Sonabhadra of U.P and the border area. It is 46 km to the south of River Rihand and Son.

Climate

The climate around Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is subtropical, characterized by huge fluctuations in temperature during summer and winter. The normal temperature ranges around 30 degree Celsius to 42 degree Celsius during summer, which drops down to 2 degree Celsius to 15 degree Celsius during winter. The best time to visit would be around the June July as weather remains pleasant during the rainy seasons.

Geography

The cities surrounding Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar are Singrauli, Wadranfnagar and Ambikapur. These areas have huge reserves of coal.  Singrauli is one such prime area and is often referred as coal zone of India.

Attraction

This place is also renowned for its efforts in respect to forest restoration and green coverage. The forest content has considerably increased in the following years enhancing its scenic beauty. The beautiful landscapes, hills perfectly suitable for trekking and waterfalls make it a perfect tourist spot.

How to Reach

Road

Sonabhadra can be accessed through roads from Robertsganj via Robertsganj-Renukut-Shaktinagar road. It is located at a distance of only 90 km from Varanasi and there are buses that connect you to this district in UP.

Train

This part of UP has a well connected railway system, which can be accessed from all the major Indian cities via the Indian Railways. There are many railway stations nearby. You can reach the lake easily from any of these stations.

Air

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar has a private airport named Muirpur Airport on the western banks. The airport is owned by Hindalco. It does not have any commercial flights and has only restricted usage of private and chartered planes. Apart from this, the Varanasi International Airport is the nearest airport.
