Aligarh Fort

Aligarh Fort, also renowned as “Aligarh Quila,” is one of the sought-after attractions in Uttar Pradesh. Situated on a hill of about 32 feet height, this fort is constructed in a polygonal structure.

Aligarh Fort is regarded as one of the strongest fort in India. It is located on the Grand Trunk road in the city of Aligarh, which was earlier known as Kol or koil. Surrounded by a wide and deep channels, this Aligarh fort has glorious history to revel in. This fort is also known as Baunasaur Quila or Ramgarh Quila. It is one of the chief attractions of the northern state Uttar Pradesh. It is situated three kilometer to north of the city and is under the supervision of Botany department of Aligarh Muslim University. The Botany department has taken great care of the fort and utilizes its inner area for maintaining the floral gardens and other plantations. The national Bird Peacock is visible inside the fort which lures the visitors.

History

This fort was built by Muhammad, son of Umar, the governor of Kol, in 1524-25 during the reign of Muslim empire Ibrahim Lodi. Sabit khan, the governor of the region during the reign of Farrukh Siyar and Muhammad Shah has rebuilt the fort. However, Aligarh fort has gain the prime importance under Madhavrao I Scindia in the year 1759. It was extended to almost three times by Banasaur in 1753.

During the battle of Ally Ghur, the fort was captured under the leadership of a French officer Perron by Lord Gerard Lake’s British army, in September 1803. It was the time when the fort has been improved and strengthened. In the revolt of 1857, the troops stayed at Aligarh rebelled, but refrained from murdering their officers, who with other residents of the forts succeeded in reaching Hathras.

Aligarh fort is ranked as the top tourist attractions among other sight scenes and hails as the best fort in Uttar Pradesh. It is designed in an enticing polygonal structure and situated on a hill with steep ravines surrounding all sides. The magnificence of the fort lies in polygonal construction having bastions at each angle, which bears firm construction of the past. The fort had a warehouse to keep special explosives and an air cooled kitchen that was built in the reign of Banasaur, the lieutenant of contemporary ruler Surajmal Jat.

Best Time to Visit

Best time to visit Aligarh is during the winter between the months September to February when the weather is cool and most comfortable. However, it is advisable to avoid going during the summer seasons as the traveler has to face the scorching heat of the sun. Alongside, monsoons are also worrisome as Aligarh witness heavy rain during the rainy seasons. Therefore, to enjoy the majestic view of the fort winter has been considered as the best season to look for.

How to Reach

By Air

Aligarh is well connected with Agra and Delhi. Though the city does not have an airport, one can come to Kheria Airport, which is in Agra. From Kheria, cabs are available that can be hired.

By Train

Train connectivity to Aligarh is very good. It is a junction and therefore trains are available from different cities of India.

By Bus

Buses go to Aligarh on regular basis from varied cities of the country to Aligarh.
