Legend

Chayavaneashwara Temple has legendary relevance due to its bondage with one of the 63 Nayanmars or Saivite Saints of South India, Iyarpagai Nayanar.

According to the legend, Nayanar spent all his wealth on temples. He fed sadhus and conducted several virtuous activities.

Legend says that one fine day, an old man came to him and asked Nayanar to gift his wife to him. Nayanar fulfilled this weird request without hesitation. In spite of protest from relatives, he asked his wife to follow the old man. She did. The old man turned into Lord Shiva. He was full of praises for Nayanar for his unconditional devotion and blessed him with liberation.

Pilgrims who come to Chayavaneashwara Temple believe that Lord Shiva tests how deep the devotion of a devotee is and rewards them when they pass the test appreciably.
