Kaliveli Lake is located in the most famous coastline of the country, Tamil Nadu. The Lake is one of the most visited lakes of Chennai and has a mesmerized natural beauty in the surrounding. Many migrant species of birds visit the lake every year and some rare flora and fauna can be found in the region. Kaliveli Lake is just 16 km from the peaceful and serene place in Pondicherry and lies in the Villupuram district. Near to the Bay of Bengal the lake is located on the Coromandel Coast.

Location

The Kaliveli Lake has its own importance as it is located on the Coromandel Coast and is one of the seasonal wetlands. The lake is also one of the largest wetlands in India and has a great ecological importance. The Lake is very near to the North of Auroville. The slope of freshwater and brackish water makes the place a very important place for breeding birds. The lake has been acknowledged nationally and internationally for its wetlands.

Flora and Fauna

The Kaliveli Lake has received great ecological importance and is the home to some rare flora and fauna. The wetlands here are the breeding grounds for some of the rare migratory birds. The birds that breed here are called Palaearctic visit the lake in the winter season. They come here during the months of July and August and fly away in the month of March or April. These birds are certainly a treat for the bird watchers and nature lovers.

Best Time to Visit

The best season to visit the Kaliveli Lake is from October to March.

Climate

Villupuram has a pleasant climate all round the year, but the summers can be quite warm as the percentage of humidity increases in the area

Ranganatha Temple

The temple has Indo-Islamic architecture and is a typical Vijayanagar style temple.

Kamalakkanni Amman Temple

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga which is the local deity and is on the way of the hills of Rajagiri.

Thumpoor

Thumpoor is the temple of Lord Nagamman and is very old. This temple is said to be 1450 years old.

Pondicherry

The city has a presence of the colonial powers, even today on their buildings, churches, temples and statues which are very splendid. The French style avenues and residential buildings preserve the colonial ambience.
