The Silappathikaram Art Gallery is located in Poompuhar on the scenic beach of the district. Poompuhar is around 270 km from Chennai and 106 km from Pondicherry (now renamed as Puducherry).

About the Gallery

Silappathikaram Art Gallery is extremely attractive as its beautiful seven-tiered building grabs attraction and also has great sculptural value. The first storey is 12 feet high and all the other floors above have a height of five feet. The topmost part of the structure is made of Kalashams of eight feet height. The entire art gallery stands at an imposing 50 feet.

The Details

At the entrance of the gallery is the 22-feet plus Magara Thoranavayil, an imposing and stunning design that adds to the brilliant look of the whole structure. There is also an anklet-shaped tank to the side of which stand the statues of Kannagi which is tall at 10 feet and Mathavi at eight and a half feet. Visitors will enjoy the stone depiction of scenes from the epics of the land in beautiful, lively shapes on the walls of the Gallery. They were carved by the sculptors of the Mamallapuram Art College and are among the key attractions of the place.

The art gallery is open for visitors from o830 hrs to 1300 hrs and from 1430 hrs to 2030 hrs on all days.
