Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal, meaning ‘Gift of the Forest’, is a summer resort in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. The town, famous for cold weather is situated at about 7000 feet above mean sea level, on a plateau, of Palani Hills of the famous Western Ghats. A man-made lake, now known as Kodaikanal Lake, is formed in the basin of the hill range. One of the biggest attractions of this location is blooming of purplish blue flowers covering the whole mountain. Incidentally, this gift of nature can be enjoyed only once in 12 years.
History
The original residents of Kodaikanal and surrounding hill range were tribals. There are mentions of the traditions and beliefs of this tribal population in contemporary literature. Some interesting anecdotes are found to include references of a tribal princess becoming consort of Lord Murugan. The idea of setting, a town on the plateau, came from British revenue officials some 200 years back. American missionaries and some British nationals built bungalows in the picturesque surroundings. Gateway to Kodaikanal was created by establishing a railhead in lower ranges in 1875. This development boosted tourist flow.
Geography
The plateau on which Kodaikanal is situated is placed between Parappar and Gundar valleys. The surrounding hillsides are covered by thick meadows. The shoal forests are part of nature’s bounty to this region. It is noteworthy that the floristic composition here is in stable final state due to right climatic conditions. Eye catching blending of solid rocks and small waterfalls is found all along the contours of the hill range. Tourists are spellbound by the beauty of gigantic trees and long stretches of forests. Numerous waterfalls and all encompassing flower beds are distinctive marks of Kodaikanal’s flora.
Eucalyptus and acacia trees are seen dotted along the whole forest area. Pear trees are also found in abundance. Multicolored Dahlias provide scenic pleasure to the eyes.
Climate
The climate of Kodaikanal is pleasant all through the year. Maximum temperature rarely crosses 20 degrees Celsius mark. High elevation helps the city to maintain cooler ambience. Heavy rains are experienced in the months of October, November and December. Peak season for tourists is From April to June. People also love to visit Kodaikanal in rain filled period.
Places of Interest
Kodaikanal Lake
This popular landmark is the star attraction of all visitors. A peripherally situated well laid path of approximately 5 kms length is a favorite rendezvous for every visitor. The lake is spread over 45 hectares and has the rough shape of a star. Boating in the serene ambience is indeed a pleasure. Row boats and paddle boats are available for hire at the boat house.
Bryant Park
This is another very popular destination for visiting tourists. The park is beautifully maintained to give a sense of lush greenery. Shrubs, cactuses and trees of various botanical species dot the whole area of this park. This park, named after its creator, H. D. Bryant has an area dedicated to roses. The very sight of hundreds of varieties of roses immensely pleases. Horticultural exhibitions, flower shows and sale of ornamental plants are customary activities in the park.
Coakers Walk
A hill edged path runs along a steep slope is gateway to view most scenic beauties of Kodaikanal’s environs. The panoramic view of the plains below is a mesmerizing experience for visitors. Grand view of snow-like cloud formation below in winters is an attraction. An observatory equipped with a telescope adds appeal to this pathway.
Berijam Lake
Serenity gives a divine touch to this hugely popular destination. The road to this lake is equally scenic. Some wildlife in the form of panthers, deer, and bison can be spotted in the surrounding forest area. Medicine forest has many plants and herbs with great medicinal values. Fire tower and Silent valley are other beckoning spots near Berijam Lake.
Green Valley View
Another fascinating spot in Kodaikanal’s vicinity is Green Valley View. True to its name, the spot offers panoramic view of the plains below. At the sharp vertical drop of about 1500 meters, Vaigai Dam is visible from this spot. A stairway leading to the spot is dotted with shops for tourists.
Pillar Rocks
Three giant rock pillars with towering height of about 120 meters offer a unique view.

Guna Caves, Dolphin’s Nose, Silver Cascade, Bear Shola falls and many more attractions keep charming the visitors. Solar Observatory, Wax Museum, Kurini Andavar Temple also gets good response from interested tourists. Those visiting Kodaikanal has many fun activities on offer, like cycling around the lake, boating, trekking, horse riding, and balloon shooting. The Yoga Center and Spa provide the right facilities for health conscious wanderers.
