Coonoor

Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiri hills after Ooty. This small beautiful place is situated at 1850 meters height above mean sea level, in the state of Tamil Nadu. Trekkers wanting to go into the Nilgiris, find this place as ideal base. This place also has distinction of production of high quality internationally famous ‘Nilgiri tea’. Huge tea plantations around this place produce fresh green tea leaves. The leaves are picked by traditional expert hands. They are processed and packaged in local factories.

Places of Interest

Sim’s Park

This is a popular destination for tourists flocking Coonoor. The beauty of serenity and charm with a perfect blend is very much found here. It is named after J. D. Sim, an Englishman of the 19th century, who played an important role in the establishment. The park has an expanse of 12 hectares. The park is home to over 1000 plant species. The plants include many varieties of special interest. Part of the park, the botanical garden, is developed in the distinct Japanese style. Magnolia, Camellia, pines and tree ferns have considerable presence in the park. 300 year old trees are found here, spreading the message of blooming life. Fruit and vegetable show is held annually and is always a big draw. A morning walk in the park impresses the visitor with quietude.

Dolphin’s Nose Viewpoint

The travel of about 10 kms to reach this spot from Coonoor is perfectly rewarded with eye catching panoramic view of the huge spread of the Nilgiri Hills. One can also enjoy the beauty of watching full drop of 250 feet deep Catherine waterfall, from the top of this viewpoint.

Lamb’s Rock

Roughly halfway between Coonoor and Dolphin’s Nose Viewpoint lies Lamb’s rock. This is another vantage point to enjoy the extensive view of tea and coffee plantations and fascinating landscapes.

Katary Falls

This third largest waterfall in Nilgiri range is about 10 kms from Coonoor. The height of about 180 feet of the waterfall can be covered by trekking. The spectacle waterfall provides the backdrop of the perfect blending of nature and development, as the waterfall is also a source for hydroelectric power generation.

Droog Fort

This 16th century fort is located about 15 kms from Coonoor. The fort is in ruins now. However, it is visited by those tourists, who are interested in history and geography together.

Pasteur Institute

This scientific establishment is almost 100 years old. The institute primarily was involved in research and production of important vaccines.

Coonoor has many more big and small points of tourists’ interest. They can be discovered by just taking a stroll along the roads leading to nature. The government runs Pomological garden is one such location. Pomegranate, apricots, apples, plums and more varieties of fruits are grown here for experimental research purpose. A visit there can satiate a connoisseur’s taste buds.

A trip to tea estate can also enrich the understanding of tea and its manufacturing process. In and around Coonoor, there are tea estates, engaged in the process of producing high quality tea. Numerous varieties of tea are available.

Accessibility

Coonoor is easily reachable by road. Good National Highways and State Highways help in reaching to Coonoor without any hassles. The surface transport network is quite extensive and connects Coonoor to most of the other important places of interest.

The pleasure of traveling in Nilgiri Mountain Railway can be experienced at Coonoor. This town is connected by meter gauge track, to Mettupalayam. The train winds its way through difficult terrains. Many bridges, steep slopes and eye catching curves make the journey, a very memorable experience. Tourists fully enjoy the train ride. The trip also provides scenic beauty of nature, as the train traverses the distance. The nearest railhead connection to the inland broad gauge network is situated at Mettupalayam, a place about 35 kms away from Coonoor.

An international airport at Coimbatore provides links to overseas tourists. The distance between the airport and Coonoor is about 70 kms. Regular international flights from Coimbatore are operating in countries like UAE and Singapore. Inland flights connect Coimbatore to all metro cities in India.
