Velankanni Beach

Velankanni Beach is one of the outstanding locations of the Velankanni town. The beach exactly lies on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal and once it was the most important port which later lost importance. Another must visit place here is the Church of our Lady of Health. Many people from Tamil Nadu and other parts of the world visit the church, people from various faiths apart from Christianity. The beach offers various activities like swimming, dining and shopping. There are many local vendors who offer different local artifacts for selling like the handloom products, silk fabrics and handloom artifacts. Seafood items are prepared on the beach itself and visitors can enjoy them there, enjoying the view. Local cuisines, tea and many food joints can be found. Accommodation is also not a problem as many options are available here.

History

Velankanni town is well known for the damage that was caused by the Tsunami struck on 26 December 2004 when people were in the church. The wave swept hundreds of people, homes, and shops along with it. Approximately more than 600 people fell victim to the natural calamity. The town was once a famous port that used to trade with Rome and Greece. Later,when the Nagapattinam port was created the Velankanni port lost its importance.

Geography

The Velankanni beach is on the south of Chennai and is on the south of Nagapattinam. It is on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.

Places to See

The tourists can visit the nearby places along with the Velankanni town and Nagapattinam district. The Dargah at the Nagore and various temples in Trichy can be visited during the stay. Trichy is just 126 km from Velankanni and one can return back in a day. Sri Rangam temple in Trichy is the most recommended place to all visitors. The museum at the Basilica is the treat for the eyes, which has some of the greatest collection of the exhibits.
