Tiruchendur Beach

Tiruchendur Beach is located in the small town of Tiruchendur. The beach comes in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu state. This beautiful beach is located in the southern part of the state and is very near to the famous Kanyakumari city. Not only romantic couples, but many devotees also visit the place. The sea waves of the beach touch the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple and people flock here during vacations all around the year.

People come here to relax and spend some quality time in the laid back atmosphere here along with family and friends. The beach is circled by dense green vegetation and many temples can be seen from the beach. Many pilgrims come to the place around the year to visit their deities, worship them and spend some relaxed time on the beach.

History

The beach has experienced the Pookuzhi ritual that has been followed for many years. The ritual involves the devotees to walk on the fire and it is said that their wishes come true when they do this. Lord Murugan is worshipped after taking the ritual bath. The place is very sacred and the 6 Aarupadai shrine is the most famous one. This is the most visited shrine in the state along with the shrines of other mythical deities. Also, Lord Muruga fought the battle in this place with the Rakshashas king Surapadma. Lord Muruga won the battle but the entire place turned red with the glory of the war. As this place was the battleground of the lords, the name “Thiru” was prefixed and hence came the name as Thiruchendur. Lord Murugan is extremely important for the Tamils, they celebrate the event of the victory of Lord Murugan over evil annually in this place during the Skanda Sashti.

Geography

The temple is located on the beach and the rising sun bows the Lord every morning. The beach borders the temple as it is located on the beach and the foaming waves of the Gulf of Mannar makes it a stunning view. The latitude of the beach is 8.495 and the longitude of the beach is 78.119. The beach is one of the best beaches of the area. A beautiful view of sunset can be enjoyed from anywhere near Tiruchendur beach.

Environment

The beach is the most stupendous beaches of the state of Tamilnadu and has rolling dunes and white sands along with south pleasant winds. The tourists find the climate as fairly cool summers and mild cold winters. The temperatures are good every day throughout the year and experience annual monsoons. The heavy rainfall makes the beach humid which can be followed by high tides. People are advised to check the weather and climatic conditions of the place before planning their vacation.

Protected Areas

The sea is open from the East and North areas, but the beach is protected by the rest of the two sides by the temple walls. The white foam made by the waves washes the temple wall.

The beach is the best place when the tourists are planning to have a relaxed vacation. Pilgrims and devotees also visit this place in huge numbers. The beach is located in the beautiful town of Tiruchendur. The coastal town is well built and is small compared to other towns. The town is located in the Gulf of Mannar and is famous among all the pilgrims.

Places to See

Gandhi Mandapam

This place can get the award for the most picturesque place. The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were kept here. The places also have a temple where the ashes were kept and every year on 2nd October, sunlight falls directly to the place where the ashes were kept.

Tiruchendur Temple

The temple showcases the rich culture of India and the temple consists of the Aarupadai veedu shrines of Murugan.   

Portuguese Church

The church has a beautiful architecture that includes the massive towers and stained glass windows improve the overall grandeur. The simple interiors are exactly contrast to the exterior. The jetty’s are used to transfer people and many other things.
