History
According to local folklore, Rameshwaram was the place from where Lord Rama built a bridge to reach Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. A Shiva Lingam was constructed after the mission was accomplished as a sign of thanksgiving to the Lord. This makes the place one of the most sacred sites for both Hindus. The grand bridge also has a pillared corridor made of 3.6 meters high granite pillars, which have rich carvings. Those who visit this place at least once in their lifetime are assured of salvation according to Hindu mythology.
