Covelong Beach

Covelong Beach is a serene and calm beach complete with white sand and a fishing village on the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal and lies on the way to the famous tourist site Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. The sea is calm here and the shining sun spreads a unique charm that spreads all over the beach to the sea, the tall palm trees that sway with the leaves singing along the breeze and the colourful sea shells lying across the silvery white sand making Covelong beach a visitor’s delight. There is an exceptional serenity in the place that you feel enthralled but even peaceful and that is why it is thronged by tourists and locals.  It is not just holiday season that sees a crowd at the beach but during the winter months, the beach witnesses a kind of frenzy yet the environment remains the same offering an inner peace of mind and tranquillity beyond expression.

The gentle sea and the sweeping wind only add to the beauty of the beach. Water sports are a major attraction at the beach and even who hesitate to slip into water are enthralled by the activities of water sports such as surfing, swimming, and more. The Covelong village where the beach is located is a beautiful and simple fishing village inhabited by fishermen and their families who still depend on the sea for their livelihood. Those who visit the beach can also get a peek into the life of these fishermen.
The beach also displays its share of history in the form of a Dutch Palace ruins, devotion in the form of churches and mosques and also life in myriad ways.

Location

Covelong is a charming, quiet and beautiful village just 40 km from Chennai, the state capital. Covelong Beach is much popular amongst domestic and international tourists.

Climate

Since Tamil Nadu has a coastal climate, it gets very hot during summer months and the temperature can even get as high as 38 degree Celsius or more. Hence winter months, especially from October-March, are the best time to visit Covelong Beach.

Beach Attractions

White Sand

Walking barefoot on the white sand on the Covelong Beach is much enthralling experience. Spread along the east coast road, the beach is a popular spot for sun bathing during day. At night, with the moon shining and moonlight all over the beach, the place comes alive all the more. 

Water Sports

Water sports are popular attractions at Covelong Beach. One of the main water sports here is wind surfing due to favourable winds. Quite a number of wind surfers can be found enjoying the battle with the sea and wind at the beach. More equally interesting water sports here are swimming, water surfing and mid-sea floating.

Church

The presence of a beautiful catholic church on the beach is where the locals offer their prayers.

Mosque

There is also a mosque just few steps across the church.

Fishing Village

Visitors also can visit a small fishing village on the Covelong Beach Resort. It is a typical fishing village where people depend solely on the sea for their livelihood. The boats, nets and other equipment of the fishermen can be found on the beach.

Mahabalipuram

Those who visit Covelong Beach Resort can also get to visit famous spots just near. One of the major attractions near the resort is the renowned Mahabalipuram famous for its 7th century shore temples. The architecture, the make and the history behind these temples are not only fascination but a sight to behold.

Crocodile Farm

Many of you must have been to poultry farm or such other kind of farms. But a farm just for crocodile breeding can be spotted near Covelong Beach. It is a great opportunity to see the magnificent crocodiles in their natural habitat and also a chance to say hello to baby crocodiles.

Dutch Fort

An ancient Dutch Fort, built by the Dutch, though now in ruins, displays Covelong Beach’s historical connection. It is actually a fascinating view – the magnificent fort in such a small hamlet, surrounded by serenity and nature.

Bargain

Visitors should note that the rates for water sports are not fixed and sometimes the rates vary depending on the season. Hence bargaining with the organizers might help you land a good deal.

Heat Protection

Because of Tamil Nadu’s coastal climate, even winter seasons at the beach can be quite warm. Hence it is advisable to apply sunscreen and carry a beach umbrella when you are at Covelong Beach.

Food

There are no restaurants or any facility for food on the beach.  Do carry food and water if you are going to be whole day at the beach.

How to Reach

Cab

It is better to take a round trip cab from Chennai as it is a good 40 km from the city. A round trip cab from the airport costs around Rs. 2500.

Bus

Covelong is also known as Kovalam locally and there are quite a number of buses that go to Covelong Beach. The 18 series buses all halt at East Coast Road (ECR) from T Nagar.
