Matka Bhawai Dance

This dance form is very interesting and needs a lot of balance in the body as the brass vessels keep on increasing with the dance moving towards its end where the dancer ends up balancing 7 to 8 vessels on her head. They also pick up money from their mouth while balancing those vessels on top of their head. This folk dance is very famous in the western India where they balance many earthen pots on their heads and also dance on brass plates. They also dance on the edge of the sword that is very risky and interesting to witness.

The men sing songs and play the musical instruments like dholak, pakhawaj, harmonium, jhanjhar and sarangi.

History

The women from Bhil, Jat, Meena, Kalbelia and Kumbhar basically do this danced in Rajasthan. This dance demands very nice balancing skills which has been developed and evolved with ladies carrying pots of water on their heads in at deserts for long distances.

Performance of Matka-Bhawai Dance

The women of this part of India are very talented and can do at least one or two dance forms that are very famous in Rajasthan. Great skills are needed to perform this dance as they have to manage those many vessels on top of their heads without letting them fall. They do so many thing while performing, like managing those vessels on their heads, dancing on the plates brim, climbing the edge of the sword without getting hurt.

All this comes to them with practice and their lifestyle like their habit of taking water on their heads in the desert for longer distances. The Kalbelia dancers are the best while balancing things on their heads and they make the best Matka-Bhawai dancers.

The males play instruments at the background on which these women do their dance. They balance earthen vessels on their heads and also dance on brass plates and edges of the swords.

Occasions for Matka Bhawai Dance

This dance form is mostly performed in fairs and occasions of Rajasthan. Also one can see this dance form being displayed on the streets of this part of India.
