History

Palace of Padmini is dedicated to the queen of Raja Rattan Singh who ruled Chittorgarh in the 1300 AD. Rani Padmini was known for her beauty, intelligence and charm. The stories of her beauty and wit reached Alludin Khilji, the sultan of Delhi, who decided to find out the truth by himself. The sultan agreed to spare the city if he could meet the renowned queen of Chittorgarh, Rani Padmini. It was then decided that he could see her reflection in the lotus pool. Enchanted by her beauty Sultan Allaudin Khilji made Raja Rattan Singh their hostage.

It was then Rani Padmini devised a plan and informed sultan that she would come to him. Her palanquins carried warriors who were successful in defeating the Sultan’s army and rescue their Raja. But this victory was short lived, as by this time they have lost most of their best warriors. The sultan’s army fought back with renewed energy and vigour which Chittorgarh could not put up to the resistance to defeat them. For Rajaput women surrender was unimaginable and Rani Padmini and the entire women of royal family committed Jauhar by jumping into the pyre.  This palace is the symbol of the valour, vigour and pride of the Rajaput women.
