The Amber Fort is built by Raja Man Singh I in the year 1592 AD but it was renovated by Jai Singh I. the uniqueness of this fort as gathered a lot of attraction towards itself and has become a very famous tourist attraction spot in Jaipur city.

Amber Fort magnificently stands high on a cliff that runs beside the highway that connects Jaipur and Delhi. This fort is known for its style in terms of art which is a perfect blend of the Hindu elements and the Mughal architecture. A perfect combination of white marble and the beautiful red sandstone leaves a mind blowing impact on the tourist. The fort has an aesthetic ambiance to itself which is very evident in the walls that encloses the layout plan comprised of four levels. Each level comprises of a courtyard. In the fort a palace built with red sandstone and marbles is built which is the house of the Diwan-e-Aam meaning “hall of public audience”, Diwan-e-Khas which means “Hall of private audience”, Sheesh Mahal-the mirror palace and the Sukh Niwas. This place is built in such a way that an artificial climate is created to maintain the palace cool throughout the year. This cool climate is created by the winds which blow over the cascade of water in the palace.

Amber Fort was occupied by the Maharajas of Rajput and their family members. In addition to the palace another attractive feature of the palace is the temple near the Ganesh Gate of the fort which is dedicated to Goddess Sila Devi who is the Goddess of the famous Chaitanya cult.

Location

Amber Fort is located in the Hill of Eagles, Cheel ka Teela along with the famous Jaipur Fort. The Cheel ka Teela is a part of the Aravalli ranges. The Amber fort is located 400m below the Jaipur Fort and an amazing and clear view of the Aravalli ranges and a glimpse of the Jaipur Fort is available. To add to the already existing beauty the Amber Fort overlooks the splendid Maota Lake at its forepart.

History

During the medieval time Amber Fort was very well known as the Dhundar which means acknowledged to a mount sacrificed located in the mighty western frontiers. Amber fort was under the rule of Kachwahas in the 11th century from the year 1037 to 1727 AD. The history of the fort is greatly linked to the rulers of the Kachwahas as it was them who founded their empire in the town of Amer. Amer was the capital during their rule until the capital was changed to Jaipur city from Amer.

Before the Amber Fort was made so magnificent it was just a small palace which was constructed by the Meenas and dedicated to the Mother Goddess. This small palace was expanded by Raja Man Singh and later his own descendant Jai Singh I further expanded the palace leaving it at its fullest glory.

Architecture

Amber Fort is parted into four important sections and each section has its own gate for entry and a courtyard. The first main entry is the Suraj Pole which means Sun Gate. This gate leads to the first courtyard Jaleb Chowk. This is the place where soldiers assemble to celebrate victory and conduct parades. Situated towards the right of the entrance is the temple dedicated to Goddess Sila Devi. The Ganesh Pol gate serves as the entry gate for the Maharajas private palace. A structure of three levels leads to the private quarters.

The second courtyard is located at the first level courtyard which is reached through the main stairways in the first courtyard. Diwan-i-Am which is an elevated platform accommodating 27 colonnades mounted on a gallery shaped like an elephant is present in the second courtyard.

Third courtyard is the Maharajas and his family’s private quarters. There are two buildings facing each other and separated by a garden. The building on the left is laid with glass panels in the interior and is called Jai Mandir. The building on the right is called Sukh Niwas which is the hall of pleasure.
