Punjab’s capital is Chandigarh and Punjabi or Gurmukhi is the native language spoken here. Situated in the north western region of India, Punjab was divided into two separate states, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab houses the largest number of steel plants in the country. Punjab is a highly developed city and there are many industries and manufacturing units that are coming up in the state. The Sikh population of the country is highest in the state of Punjab.

Agriculture is the prime industry here and wheat production is the largest in the state among all other states in the country. Some of the industries that are growing on a big scale in the state are textiles, machine tools, manufacturing, scientific instruments, financial services, tourism, bicycle, garments and water meter. Few of the most notable cities in the state are Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Mohali, Jalandhar, Bathinda and Patiala.

Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple as it famously known, attracts millions of visitors every day. It is believed to be one of the top religious places of the world, in terms of its peacefulness and its structural design. The Golden Temple attracts more tourists than the Taj Mahal too. There are also many premium and luxury hotels of global standards to cater to the increasing foreign tourists to the state.

Exploring the Colourful City of Punjab

Punjab has a very rich and at the same time, very colourful cultural heritage. The costumes and the dance movements of the Punjabi dance, Bhangra, are very vibrant. The Bhangra dance is usually performed to welcome the spring season, Baisakhi.  This dance is famous all over the world and the movements are those that a farmer does on his land.

Basant, Lohri, Teej and Baisakhi are the famous festivals that are celebrated in the state with huge fervour. There is also a story-telling festival in Punjab, known as Kissa and stories from regions as far as Arabia, Afghanistan and Iran are told here.

Wedding in Punjab are fantastic affairs that reflect the grandeur and the spirit of the people. The weddings are marked by noise, culture, costumes, rituals and more importantly, food. The basic dialect in Punjab is the Majhi, however there are some not-so-widely used dialects as well like Malwi, Majhi, Pwadhi and Daobi. These are the dialects that are used for songs and poetry.

Punjab is also known for its famous folk tales that talk about Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiban, Sassi Punnum, Sohni Mhiwal, Puran Bhagat, Dulla Bhatti, Jeona Maud etc. Famous songs from the state are Dhola, Mayhiah and Boliyan, whereas famous dances from the state are Bhangra, Dhamaal, Dhola, Giddha and Sammi.

Tourism in Punjab

Punjab, with its extremely great architectural buildings, historical battle fields, peaceful religious shrines, enticing green farmlands, excellent cuisine and cordial people, has become one of the most preferred tourist destinations. There are lots of local and international tourists who are visiting the state in huge numbers because of great hospitality the state offers. The transport services are excellent and the frequency of buses between important cities is very high. Patiala, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana are cities that are well connected with each other. The food is great and the quality is incomparable. The hotels are of global standard and the tourists love to flock to this place because they find Punjab to be a place that is deep rooted in its rich and ancient cultural heritage.
