Pench National Park

Pench National Park drives its name from Pench River which while flowing divides the park equally into western and eastern halves. In 1977, this park was declared as the sanctuary but at that time, it was not a national park. This park raised its status to be the National Park in 1983. In 1992, this park was recognized as Tiger Reserve area. This park is well known for water rafting as it’s the only National Park with this facility. This Park has won many prizes, one of them was won in 2011 for the award of Best management. Pench national Park is mainly famous for its two entry gates for tourists by the name of Turiya and Karmajhiri.

Description of the Park

The Pench National Park and Tiger Reserve both are spread in the area of 257 sq. km. next to the northern frontier of Nagpur District. Pench National park is situated in Seoni and Chhindwara districts which are on the southern border of Madhya Pradesh in the neighborhood of Maharashtra. The park took its name on or after the Pench River, which ambled all the way through it similar to an immense python, separating it down the midpoint. Prosperous in its biodiversity, its topography defined by valleys, hills and the infrequent steep slant, Pench is a significant bionetwork underneath a great quantity of flora and fauna, together with a well-off assortment of marine life. The beauty of this park which is in the centre of India has received fictional quantity of attention from all.

Certainly, the Pench National Park is four different forest areas in one which includes an over-spending of vegetation, grasses, bushes, climbers, weeds and herbs, with teak. Teak is the most well-known type of the tree group. This park has given shed to 33 mammals’ species, 164 kinds of birds, river containing 50 different types of fish, 10 types of amphibians, variety of reptiles and an extensive variety of insect life.

As the name tiger reserved area suggests, Pench is also a shelter for tigers and panthers all above other mammals. Pench has sambhar, chital, nilgai, barking deer, gaur, sloth bears, langurs, monkeys, chausingha, wild dogs, mouse deer, jackals, foxes, hyenas, and many more.

This park has a glorious history of the present tiger reserve. In Ain-i-Akbari, the description of parks natural wealth and richness is there in a very beautiful manner.

Location

The total area of Pench National Park is 293 km². It is situated in North East. In the southern range of Satpura, Pench is covered with small hills and thick forests of teak. The height varies from 425 to 620 meters above all. The temperature here differs in December from 4 °C to 42 °C in the month of May. The average rainfall observed here is approximately 1300 mm.

The total area of Pench National Park is 758 km2, out of which the main area of 299 km2 is covered with Pench National Park and the Mowgli Pench Sanctuary and the outstanding 464 km2 in Pench national park is the safeguard area.

Flora

In Pench National Park, you can find a stunning range of flora. There are many trees found here such as the Bamboo, Ain, Karu, Tendu Haldu, Arjun and Char. 

Fauna

The fauna found here are Tiger, Barking Deer, Leopard, Sloth bear, Wild dog, Sambar, Indian Bison, Blue Bull, dotted Deer, Chausingha, Ratel and the Flying Squirrel. You can also find Langurs, Monkeys, Porcupines, Pangolins and Mouse deer here.

Best Time to Visit

Pench National Park has tropical monsoonal climate, its monsoon season which starts from July to September and has maximum rainfall observed in these months.

  • The winters start here from November and last till February. The lowest temperature observed here is in minus and often reaches freezing point.
  • The summers here start from April and lasts till June. The maximum temperature observed is 45 degree Celsius.

The park remains open from October till June. The best time to visit this park is from November till March as this time the weather is best for the animal visit.

The park is open from October to June but November to Mid March is best for the visit when the weather is just ideal for animal sightings.

The park remains open from 5.00 am to 7.00 pm.

How to Reach

By Air

The nearest airport to this place is Nagpur which is connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and other. From there, one can get a taxi easily.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Nagpur which is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and other major cities of the region. From there, 24 hours buses and taxies are available.

By Road

A national highway connects this park to Nagpur and Jabalpur and further Nagpur is connected well to the major cities by road.
