Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary

No place can be a better refuge for the mighty tiger than the Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary. Dense vegetation coupled with luxuriant growth of floral species makes the Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary an ambient refuge for the tiger. Numerous other species of fish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals are also found at the sanctuary, making it a perfect place for the nature lover to head to.

The sanctuary is home to tiger, sambar, nilgai, chital, wild boar and sloth bear among numerous other faunal species. Nagzira, the place came to be known by its present name as it was home to elephants in the past and hence the place was aptly named Nagzira. Elephants are called as Nags in Sanskrit and this eventually led to the place being named Nagzira.

A rich mix of floral species exists within the sanctuary. Major forest within the sanctuary is Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest.

A village by the name of Thadezari is located within the geographic boundary of Nagzira wildlife sanctuary. Teak forests, grasslands and bamboo forests are found throughout the sanctuary lending an ambient look to the entire atmosphere.

Conservation education is being imparted at Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary in true earnest. Keeping this in mind, a small museum has been designed within the boundary of the sanctuary, where tourists are oriented about the relevance of floral and faunal wealth of the region.

Audio visual aids too are used to orient the visitors about the importance of our floral and faunal wealth and regular screening of wildlife related movies is held in the auditorium.

Location

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Gondia, Maharashtra that falls in Bhandara Forest Division’s Tirora region. Situated in Bhandara district of Maharashtra, the closest railhead is at Nagpur which is 150 km from Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nagzira is home to numerous floral and faunal species and can serve as a learning ground for anyone having key interest in exploring the various aspects of nature.

Flora

The sanctuary has a unique floral collection in the sense that it has mixed forests, teak, bamboo and grassland plantations. Tree species as Terminalia tomentosa, Tectona grandis, Bonbax ceiba and Woodfordia fruticosa are found within the geographic boundaries of the sanctuary.

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is on the wish list of Botanists who wish to explore the floral richness of Vidharb region of the state of Maharashtra.

Fauna

Rich faunal diversity of the region attracts visitors to Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary. Expect to find a range of invertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians within the boundaries of the sanctuary.

Nagzira is home to around 49 species of butterflies and you can see around 34 species of mammals including Tiger, Panther, Wolf and Jackal in the sanctuary. Reptiles including Indian Rock Python and King Cobra too can be seen in the sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary can be visited any time from October till May. The sanctuary remains closed during the monsoon months.

How to Reach

Rail

Nagpur located 150 km away from Nagzira is the best place to reach if you are travelling by train. Nagpur is located centrally and is well connected with trains throughout the country. However, Gondia located at a distance of 50 km from Nagzira is the closest rail head and trains can be taken from Nagpur to continue the journey to Gondia.

Air

Nagpur Airport located at a distance of 150 km from Nagzira is the closest. Nagzira has flights from all across the country, making it an accessible way of reaching Nagzira.

Road

Nagzira is connected via the road route and can be reached comfortably via Nagpur (150 km), Gondia (50 km), Kanha (120 km) and Pench (160 km).

Where to Stay

Not much is available in terms of accommodation within Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary. However, for an avid nature lover Nagzira Jungle Resort located close to the wildlife sanctuary can be a perfect fit as it gives them the opportunity to be in sync with nature.

Other hotels which are located in vicinity of the sanctuary include Hotel Grand Nupur, Dua Continental, and Hotel President among others.
