Panchganga Temple

The only holy place in the city of Mahabaleshwar is named as Panchganga Mandir. This is the holy place that receives holy water from five rivers named Koyna, Venna, Gayatri, Krishna and Savitri. This union of five rivers gives this place its name Panchganga in which literal meaning of Panch is five and Ganga is the name of Holy River. The water of all the rivers flows throw the mouth of cow that has been carved from stone. Raja Singhandeo of Yadav dynasty of Devgiri during 13th century built this temple. Later, during 16th century, Maratha Emperor Shivaji modified this temple. Temple has been devoted to Lord Krishna and adorns a beautiful idol of Lord Krishna. The history of the temple was linked to the curse that Savitri gave to the Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu also known as Trimurtis who flow in this area with the names of Koyna, Venna and Krishna respectively.

The temple also has some shops that sell the handicrafts goods. The temple can be visited from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and it takes around one hour to view the complete temple.

The area has moderate type of climate all around the year and the best time to visit area is from October to June.

How to Reach

By Road

Taxis can be hired from Mahabaleshwar to reach the temple at a minimal cost of Rs 30 to Rs 200.

By Bus

The buses run by the private operators and state owned operators can be taken to reach the temple.

By Train

The closest rail line to reach Mahabaleshwar is in Wather that is located at a distance of 62 km.

By Air

The nearest airport is in Pune at distance of 120 km.
